Tipping Points as evidenced in global events are, in many ways, influenced by media. This just released, ground-breaking book GLOBAL EVENTS: TIPPING POINTS by Dr Philip Gordon, Ph.D, details three case studies which were selected on the basis of common Tipping Point Attributes. Each involved media contagiousness and stickiness during their development and each arrived at a "dramatic moment in time," which could be characterized by the phenomenon of Tipping Points. Recent GLOBAL EVENTS: TIPPING POINTS Case Studies: The 2008 Presidential Campaign of Barack Obama was chosen to examine a narrower scope and timeframe for the application of the analysis. The International Financial Crisis of 2007-2010, involves a broader data study period to identify trends and more complex issues. And the Climate Change study is included for consideration as the research and analysis revealed critical relationships between media impact and global events. As the issue of Climate Change is still evolving, Dr Gordon provides a Global Events: Tipping Point Theory methodology for analyzing and predicting our planets' most pressing global issue. Dr Philip Gordon, Ph.D was awarded his doctorate (with high honors) from the Centre d'Etudes Diplomatiques et Strategiques (CEDS) Paris, France and graduated with his masters while on a full fellowship from Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, Maryland. He currently lives in Burgundy, France with his wife and two sons. Review Comments: "The genius of the formulation of GLOBAL EVENTS: TIPPING POINTS is that it takes explicit account of the role of social media and the internet at facilitating bifurcations and promoting dynamical instability. In effect, we have trimmed a few feet of tail off the kite. As a reader, I was informed and educated as to the factors which conspire to influence stability / instability in complex social systems. ...the book does a good job of making sense of past bifurcations and dynamical instabilities, namely political instability, our perception of global climate change, and international economic crises ... my compliments on a truly insightful Global Events: Tipping Points." - Prof. Dr. (med.) Excellent!" - Dr. Derek EL ZEIN, PhD Professor, Avocat, Expert: Communications "A truly fascinating book that (teaches) a whole new way of thinking about major events and how the media can influence them. Being a political junkie I was heavily into the media coverage of the 2008 Obama election and the global financial meltdown both via TV and the blogosphere. I now find myself looking for the tipping points and stickiness factors as other key events unfold. Usually, I have trouble reading theoretical books but this one was an easy read and if you want supporting data then the references are there. This could become a solid reference for those in the media who truly want to understand what they are reporting. Highly recommended and I look forward to Dr. Gordon's ongoing analysis of (future) events." - Dr. Ralph Moorhouse, PhD Political junkie, Expert: natural polymers for industries

BREAKING NEWS: Banks Fined $1.9 Billion by Regulators for Rigging Lending Rates (and 30 more being investigated.)UBS: Switzerland's biggest bank, and Barclays Bank were found guilty and ordered to pay $1.9 billion to U.S., U.K. and Swiss regulators for trying to rig global interest rates. –Bloomberg News, December 21, 2012. Unethical behavior by the world's leading banking institutions contributed to the $10 trillion global financial meltdown. But there is so much more to this historic story… The International Financial Crisis: 2007–2010: TIPPING POINTS A ground-breaking book by Dr Philip Gordon, Ph.D detailing the origins, impacts and complexity of the International Financial Crisis. Dr Gordon provides a unique perspective on the dynamics of this worldwide “economic epidemic” and an innovative Tipping Point Theory methodology for analyzing (and predicting) global events, that are in many ways, influenced by media. There is little dispute within the scientific community that humans are changing Earth's climate on a decadal to century time-scale. By the end of this century, without a reduction in emissions, atmospheric CO2 is projected to increase to levels that Earth has not experienced for more than 30 million years. As greenhouse gas emissions propel Earth toward a warmer climate state, an improved understanding of climate dynamics in warm environments is needed to inform public policy decisions. In Understanding Earth's Deep Past, the National Research Council reports that rocks and sediments that are millions of years old hold clues to how the Earth's future climate would respond in an environment with high levels of atmospheric greenhouse gases. Understanding Earth's Deep Past provides an assessment of both the demonstrated and underdeveloped potential of the deep-time geologic record to inform us about the dynamics of the global climate system. The report describes past climate changes, and discusses potential impacts of high levels of atmospheric greenhouse gases on regional climates, water resources, marine and terrestrial ecosystems, and the cycling of life-sustaining elements. While revealing gaps in scientific knowledge of past climate states, the report highlights a range of high priority research issues with potential for major advances in the scientific understanding of climate processes. This proposed integrated, deep-time climate research program would study how climate responded over Earth's different climate states, examine how climate responds to increased atmospheric carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases, and clarify the processes that lead to anomalously warm polar and tropical regions and the impact on marine and terrestrial life. In addition to outlining a research agenda, Understanding Earth's Deep Past proposes an implementation strategy that will be an invaluable resource to decision-makers in the field, as well as the research community, advocacy organizations, government agencies, and college professors and students.

This just released, ground-breaking book: DATA MINING: PREDICTING TIPPING POINTS by Dr Philip Gordon, Ph.D, details three case studies which were selected on the basis of common Tipping Point Attributes: Each involved media contagiousness and stickiness during their development and, each arrived at a "dramatic moment in time," which could only be characterized by the phenomenon of Tipping Points. In a rapidly changing world with threats to the sustainability of the environment, societies, institutions and the people within them, a crucial question for educational leaders needs to be: what are these threats to sustainability, and how does the role of the educational leader need adapting to meet them through this century? Mike Bottery unpacks this question by examining how major terms in the field are used, mis-used, or mis-understood, before looking specifically at five covert threats: wicked problems, positive feedback, exponential growth, inappropriate degrees of connectivity, and tipping points. He looks at the impact these threats have upon sustainability at micro-, meso-, and macro- levels, and how understanding and meeting these threats needs to change the educational leader's thought, values, and practice. Bottery argues that such awareness should not only change the focus of educational institutions, but also the focus of those inspecting such institutions. Such recognition then needs to become part of the cultural zeitgeist of present-day societies if future generations are to inherit a sustainable world. In so doing, The Educational Leader in a World of Covert Threats provides an original, timely and essential re-think of the educational leader's role which makes it unique in the educational leadership literature.

2016 CCCC Best Book Award in Technical and Scientific Communication In the past ten years, we have seen great changes in the ways government organizations and media respond to and report on emerging global epidemics. The first outbreak to garner such attention was SARS (severe acute respiratory syndrome). In Rhetoric of a Global Epidemic, Huiling Ding uses SARS to explore how various cultures and communities made sense of the epidemic and communicated about it. She also investigates the way knowledge production and legitimation operate in global epidemics, the roles that professionals and professional communicators, as well as individual citizens, play in the communication process, points of contention within these processes, and possible entry points for ethical and civic intervention. Focusing on the rhetorical interactions among the World Health Organization, the United States, China, and Canada, Rhetoric of a Global Epidemic investigates official communication and community grassroots risk tactics employed during the SARS outbreak. It consists of four historical cases, which examine the transcultural risk communication about SARS in different geopolitical regions at different stages. The first two cases deal with risk communication practices at the early stage of the SARS epidemic when it originated in southern China. The last two cases move to transcultural rhetorical networks surrounding SARS. With such threats as SARS, avian flu, and swine flu capturing the public imagination and prompting transnational public health preparedness efforts, the need for a rhetoric of global epidemics has never been greater. Government leaders, public health officials, health care professionals, journalists, and activists can learn how to more effectively craft and manage transcultural risk communication from Ding’s examination of the complex and varied modes of communication around SARS. In addition to offering a detailed case study, Rhetoric of a Global Epidemic provides a critical methodology that professional communicators can use in their investigations of epidemics and details approaches to facilitating more open, participatory risk communication at all levels.

The twenty-first century is replete with uncertainty and complexity: game-changing events and trends are transforming the world beyond recognition. For the first time in human history more people live in cities than in the countryside and greater numbers suffer from obesity than from hunger. Emerging economies now represent half of the global economy and during the next few decades India will be the biggest country in terms of population, China the largest in output and the United States the richest among the major economies on a per capita income basis. Food and water shortages will likely become humankind's most important challenge. In this accessible introduction, Mauro Guillén and Emilio Ontiveros deploy the tools of economics, sociology and political science to provide an analytical perspective on both the problems and opportunities facing business in the modern world.
