Excerpt from German Varnish-Making For several years information as to progress in varnish manufacture in Germany has been Obtained only through the German journals, which are not generally accessible in America; so the publication Of a new book on the subject by Professor Bottler, who has made a scientific and practical study Of the same, calls for an English translation. It is perhaps too concise and brief, being written for those who are somewhat familiar with German methods, but it is at any rate authoritative and full Of interest. The translator thought best to add to it various notes, which in the end amounted to additions so considerable that it seemed well to call attention to the fact in the title of the book. The translation is printed in such a manner as 'to be distinct from these additions and easily recognized; in these addi tions it has been the aim to avoid repeating anything to be found in the translator's former book (technology of Point and Varnish), but to make this supplementary to that earlier treatise, acquaintance with which is presumed on the part of the reader of the present work. This necessarily gives the matter thus added a fragmentary character which it is hoped may be excused on the ground that the collection and publication of facts is the aim, rather than literary effect. Much of this added matter has to do with paints, and it may be questioned whether it is in place in a book on varnish. But in reality the two are inseparably connected.
