Excerpt from Geology of the San Andreas 15-Minute Quadrangle, Calaveras County, California The rolling upland surface and the northwest-trend ing ridges that rise above the general level of this surface were shaped largely during Late Cretaceous and early Eocene time, when the Sierra Nevada stood much lower than at present. Steep-walled canyons dissect the upland surface in the northeast part Of the quadrangle. These canyons and the canyon of the Stanislaus River in the extreme southeast corner Of the quadrangle are younger features that result from uplift of the Sierra Nevada and more rapid erosion during later Tertiary and, probably, Quaternary time. The authors of the ten chapters in this volume critically examine the geologic evidence that constrains timing and magnitude of movement on various faults of the San Andreas system, and they develop and discuss paleogeologic reconstructions based on these constraints. The volume offers new insight into the evolution of the San Andreas fault system,

It is always a moving experience for us here in California to stand on the San Andreas fault—to realize that the ground beneath our feet has shifted 330 km dextrally over the last 24 Ma—to realize that even as we stand there, it may shift laterally as much as 6 m—and to know that is some places it is presently creeping as rapidly as 35mm/yr.
