DOWNLOAD EBOOKThis synthesis will be of interest to state and local traffic engineers, transportation planners, transit operators, law enforcement officials, public information agencies, and others responsible for the transportation elements of freeway corridors. Information is provided on the policies and procedures for freeway corridor management, and descriptions of a number of techniques and practices are presented. Traffic growth and increasing congestion on urban freeways require a comprehensive approach toward managing the complex elements of freeway operations. This report of the Transportation Research Board provides information on freeway corridor management strategies, the components of management, examples of effective applications of the strategies, and benefits of freeway corridor management. The management techniques that are discussed include freeway surveillance and control; corridor street surveillance and control; high-occupancy vehicle facilities and incentives; police enforcement and traffic control; hazardous material and other truck traffic restrictions; alternative route planning; motorist assistance patrols; motorist information techniques; and traffic management for recurrent congestion, for incidents, for special events, and for work zones.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKThe General Accounting Office (GAO) examined the development and application of intelligent vehicle and highway systems (IVHS), more commonly known as smart highways, as a means of reducing traffic congestion. The following questions were addressed: What have the major studies concluded about the potential effects of IVHS, and to what extent are these findings empirically based? What additional information can be learned from IVHS field tests under way? What major obstacles could impede the realization of transportation benefits possible through IVHS technologies? In brief, GAO found that the empirical basis for judging the effects of IVHS is limited but nonetheless positive and promising.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKThe drawings, models, and images highlighted in the Overdrive exhibition and catalogue reveal the complex and often underappreciated facets of Los Angeles and illustrate how the metropolis became an internationally recognized destination with a unique design vocabulary, canonical landmarks, and a coveted lifestyle. This investigation builds upon the groundbreaking work of generations of historians, theorists, curators, critics, and activists who have researched and expounded upon the development of Los Angeles. In this volume, thought-provoking essays shed more light on the exhibition's narratives, including Los Angeles's physical landscape, the rise of modernism, the region's influential residential architecture, its buildings for commerce and transportation, and architects' pioneering uses of bold forms, advanced materials, and new technologies. The related exhibition will be held at the J. Paul Getty Museum from April 9 to July 21, 2013.
