Excerpt from The Logographic-Emblematical French Spelling-Book: Or, French Pronunciation Made Easy Thanks to that cooler, more gentle, and dispassionate inclination of fair woman's breast, which, disposing her to doubt, opens her heart to a deliberate examination of the motives to grant or refuse her belief, and leaves it accessible to conviction, the French Logographic Spelling-Book, so long the object of the abuse of proud, rash, deciding man, which, from its very first appearance, had like to have smothered its success, has at last reached the honours of a fourth Edition. So, once, the world had continued in the darkness, a prey to Paganism, had not the feminine heart, better prepared for Christianity, been found the worthiest temple for its reception. Struck with a just sense of gratitude for his obligations to his benevolent Patronesses, the Author, far from considering himself entitled, listlessly to enjoy his success, does, and will ever, view it as an imperious command, laying upon him the task of a more persevering industry and renewed exertions. In order, therefore, to merit the patronage obtained, he has endeavoured to give this new edition all the perfection which an unrelaxed contemplation of the subject and a long professional experience enabled him to bestow. The method, which before was merely practical, by means of the Appendix added, it is hoped, will receive the light of a clearly displayed theory, the dryness of which, it has been attempted to mellow, when possible, with the allurements of fancy and ornaments of style, as far as they were consistent with the original matter. The selection of the reading pieces, mostly of the Author's composition, has been particularly guided by wish to create interest. The favourable reception given to the Fastes Britanniques, of which half the edition is already gone, has led him to believe that its greatest ornament, the reign of his present most gracious Majesty, would be a theme deeply interesting to the Reader; and the exposition of the state of the Gauls, previous to their being invaded by the Franks, under Clovis, together with the reign of that Prince, is here offered, together with a a few more poetical pieces, the relaxing amusements of his vacant hours.
