The emergence and widespread use personal computers and network technologies have seen the development of interest in the use of computers to support cooperative work. This volume presents the proceedings of the ninth European conference on Computer Supported Cooperative Work (CSCW). This book draws inspiration from Maurice Merleau-Ponty's concept of intercorporeality to offer a new, multidisciplinary perspective on the body. By drawing attention to the body's ability to simultaneously sense and be sensed, Merleau-Ponty transcends the object-subject divide and describes how bodies are about, into, and within other bodies. Such inherent relationality constitutes the essence of intercorporeality, and the chapters in this book examine such relationality from a host of diverse perspectives. The book begins with an introductory chapter in which the editors review the current research on bodily interaction, and introduce the notion of intercorporeality as a potentially integrative framework. The first section then offers four chapters devoted to clarifying theoretical and developmental perspectives on intercorporeality. The studies in this volume use ethnographic, ethnomethodological, and sociolinguistic research to demonstrate how legal agents conduct their practices and exercise their authority in relation to non-expert participants and broader publics. Instead of treating law as a body of doctrines, or law and society as a relationship between legal institutions and an external society, the studies in this volume closely examine law at work: specific legal practices and social interactions produced in national and international settings. These settings include courtrooms and other tribunals, consultations between lawyers and clients, and media forums in which government officials address international law. Because law is a public institution, and legal actions are publicly accountable, technical law must interface with non-expert members of the public. The embodied actions and interactions that comprise the interface between professional and lay participants in legal settings therefore must do justice to legal traditions and statutory obligations while also contending with mundane interactional routines, ordinary reasoning, and popular expectations. Specific chapters examine topics such as family disputes in a system of Sharia Law; rhetorical contestations about possible violations of international law during a violent conflict in the Middle-East; the transformation of a courtroom hearing brought about by the virtual presence of remote witnesses relayed through a video link; the practices through which written records are used to mediate and leverage a witness's testimony; and the discursive and interactional practices through which authorized parties use legal categories to problems with individual conduct. Poetry and philosophy are siblings and sometimes synonymous discourses. In this postmodern age where everything seems to be constantly shifting, truth is regularly questioned. One might refer to Plato’s Allegory of the Cave to explain shifting baseline syndrome. Space Craft attempts to describe the moment and to reassure Homo sapiens by responding to Peter Sloterdijk’s essay “Deep Observation” in his book What Happened in the Twentieth Century? In that essay, Sloterdijk states, “The creation of space stations represents a dramatic break in the history of human self-relations. . . . To have a conscience means to know that one is observed from a deep off-center position and pervaded by it.” Rich Murphy’s poems take the idea of seeing Earth as a space station or spaceship and stretch the metaphor to imagine a possible future with a lens for time and space. The idea is one in which space and time, the environment on the spaceship Earth, need crafting. His poems name, and in that embrace they find a way for poetry. They also attempt to embrace a way for a person, for Homo sapiens, without corporate capitalism and without Harari’s Homo Deus threats. The poems imagine the problems with things as they are and imagine possible solutions. The poetics and resulting poetry are what Blake called “firm persuasion.”
