Excerpt from Forest Growth and Sheep Grazing: In the Cascade Mountains of Oregon Hon. Binger Hermann, Commissioner of the General Land Office, furnished the writer with valuable letters of introduction to several prominent citizens of Oregon, who were familiar with the sheep grazing question. Mr. John Minto, of Salem, Oreg., gave a general letter of introduction to the sheepmen of eastern Oregon which made it possible to secure a large amount of information through channels that ordina rily would have been closed to a Government officer investigating this subject. Among the many others whose courtesy contributed materi ally to the success of the investigation should be mentioned particularly Mr. Thomas Cooper and Mr. E. F. Benson of the western land office of the Northern Pacific Railroad, at Tacoma, Wash., who have recently been conducting an investigation of Sheep grazing on the railroad lands. With over thirty thousand occupations currently in existence, workers today face a bewildering array of careers from which to choose, and upon which to center their lives. But there is more at stake than just a paycheck. For too long, work has driven a wedge between families, dividing husband from wife, father from son, mother from daughter, and family from home. Building something that will last requires a radically different approach than is common or encouraged today. In Durable Trades, Groves uncovers family-centered professions that have endured the worst upheavals in history--including the Industrial Revolution--and continue to thrive today. Through careful research and thoughtful commentary, Groves offers another way forward to those looking for a more durable future. USDA Forest Service Experimental Forests and Ranges (EFRs) are scientific treasures, providing secure, protected research sites where complex and diverse ecological processes are studied over the long term. This book offers several examples of the dynamic interactions among questions of public concern or policy, EFR research, and natural resource management practices and policies. Often, trends observed – or expected -- in the early years of a research program are contradicted or confounded as the research record extends over decades. The EFRs are among the few areas in the US where such long-term research has been carried out by teams of scientists. Changes in society’s needs and values can also redirect research programs. Each chapter of this book reflects the interplay between the ecological results that emerge from a long-term research project and the social forces that influence questions asked and resources invested in ecological research. While these stories include summaries and syntheses of traditional research results, they offer a distinctly new perspective, a larger and more complete picture than that provided by a more typical 5-year study. They also provide examples of long-term research on EFRs that have provided answers for questions not even imagined at the time the study was installed.
