Private Detective Leon Strong sits in his office, nursing a hangover from the night previous. Top of the desk and under his boots lies a copy of the Diamond City Forum, the prima fascia type ink all about said previous night's explosion over at Pillar Electric, Diamond City's megadont power plant. There's a body...blown to bits...no ID as of yet... The Forum screams terrorism. Along with a plea for old west justice. The phone rings. It's a guy by the name of Purly Breed, a longtime employee of Pillar. Purly's at police headquarters, downtown, locked in a holding cell, and about half an inch away from a boat ride to Guantanamo. But in the middle of the call, Purly's attacked. Amidst a scuffle comes the boom of a police model .38... And the phone goes dead... Brace yorself for a wild ride, as what at first appears to be terrorism may actually be a plot to mask a murder. When the smoke clears, Strong uncovers an unexpected dynasty wrapped up in a dirt scam - a real-estate swindle - that's got every mugwump in town tipping like dominoes, then pushing up daisies. But what's poised and ready to drop is something that'll shake your faith in all things holy. The final domino, the Fission Factor....

Clinical Bioenergetics: From Pathophysiology to Clinical Translation provides recent developments surrounding the etiology and pathophysiology of inherited and acquired energy-delated disorders. Across 40 chapters, world leaders in bioenergetics and mitochondrial medicine discuss novel methodologies designed to identify deficiencies in cellular bioenergetics, as well as the safety and efficacy of emerging management strategies to address poor cellular bioenergetics. Topics discussed include the omics landscape of impaired mitochondrial bioenergetics, hormones, tissue bioenergetics and metabolism in humans. Disease-specific case studies, modes of analysis in clinical bioenergetics, and therapeutic opportunities for impaired bioenergetics, addressing both known treatment pathways and future directions for research, are discussed in-depth. Diseases and Disorders examined include brain injury, chronic fatigue syndrome, psychiatric disorders, pulmonary fibrosis, neurodegenerative disorders, heart failure, chronic kidney disease, obesity, and insulin resistance, among others. - Provides a thorough discussion of foundational aspects of bioenergetics and disease, modes of analysis, and treatments for impaired bioenergetics - Discusses the role of bioenergetics and treatment pathways in brain injury, chronic fatigue syndrome, psychiatric disorders, pulmonary fibrosis, neurodegenerative disorders, heart failure, chronic kidney disease, obesity, and insulin resistance, among other diseases and disorders - Features chapter contributions from international leaders in translational bioenergetics research and clinical practice

This book is intended to provide an introduction to the basic principles of nuclear fission reactors for advanced undergraduate or graduate students of physics and engineering. The presentation is also suitable for physicists or engineers who are entering the nuclear power field without previous experience with nuclear reactors. No background knowledge is required beyond that typically acquired in the first two years of an undergraduate program in physics or engineering. Throughout, the emphasis is on explaining why particular reactor systems have evolved in the way they have, without going into great detail about reactor physics or methods of design analysis, which are already covered in a number of excellent specialist texts. The first two chapters serve as an introduction to the basic physics of the atom and the nucleus and to nuclear fission and the nuclear chain reaction. Chapter 3 deals with the fundamentals of nuclear reactor theory, covering neutron slowing down and the spatial dependence of the neutron flux in the reactor, based on the solution of the diffusion equations. The chapter includes a major section on reactor kinetics and control, including'tempera ture and void coefficients and xenon poisoning effects in power reactors. Chapter 4 describes various aspects offuel management and fuel cycles, while Chapter 5 considers materials problems for fuel and other constituents of the reactor. The processes of heat generation and removal are covered in Chapter 6.

In eukaryotes, lipid metabolism requires the function of peroxisomes. These multitasking organelles are also part of species-specific pathways such as the glyoxylate cycle in yeast and plants or the synthesis of ether lipid in mammals. Proteins required for the biogenesis of peroxisomes typically assemble in large molecular complexes, which participate in membrane formation, protein transport, peroxisome duplication and - inheritance during cell division. Peroxisomal function is essential for life. Mutations in PEX genes, encoding for biogenesis factors, are often associated with lethal disorders. The association of peroxisomes with other organelles suggests an extensive participation in organellar crosstalk. This book represents a state-of-the-art review in the field of peroxisome research encompassing the cell and molecular biology of peroxisome biogenesis and its diseases, the protein complexes involved in this process and the modern technologies applied to study them. The book is intended for graduate students, researchers and lecturers in biochemistry, molecular and cell biology with a biomedical background.

This book is the product of a congressionally mandated study to examine the feasibility of eliminating the use of highly enriched uranium (HEU2) in reactor fuel, reactor targets, and medical isotope production facilities. The book focuses primarily on the use of HEU for the production of the medical isotope molybdenum-99 (Mo-99), whose decay product, technetium-99m3 (Tc-99m), is used in the majority of medical diagnostic imaging procedures in the United States, and secondarily on the use of HEU for research and test reactor fuel. The supply of Mo-99 in the U.S. is likely to be unreliable until newer production sources come online. The reliability of the current supply system is an important medical isotope concern; this book concludes that achieving a cost difference of less than 10 percent in facilities that will need to convert from HEU- to LEU-based Mo-99 production is much less important than is reliability of supply.

University Physics is a three-volume collection that meets the scope and sequence requirements for two- and three-semester calculus-based physics courses. Volume 1 covers mechanics, sound, oscillations, and waves. Volume 2 covers thermodynamics, electricity and magnetism, and Volume 3 covers optics and modern physics. This textbook emphasizes connections between between theory and application, making physics concepts interesting and accessible to students while maintaining the mathematical rigor inherent in the subject. Frequent, strong examples focus on how to approach a problem, how to work with the equations, and how to check and generalize the result. The text and images in this textbook are grayscale.
