Incidents involving rescue from road vehicles are dramatically increasing in frequency. There are some 3500 deaths on the road each year, with 35,000 serious injuries. Modern motor vehicles are becoming safer for occupants, due to advancement in technology, so persons are more likely to survive high impact speeds, but are also more likely to become entrapped. The Fire and Rescue Service, as the primary rescue service, requires national guidance to ensure a similar standard of response anywhere in the UK. This manual is designed to highlight current best practice with regard to vehicle rescue techniques and first responder trauma care. Each chapter forms an independent reference source, but the publication as a whole forms a complete guide. Chapters cover: vehicle design and construction; dealing with incidents; safety procedures; operational procedures; extrication equipment; medical considerations and trauma care; Integrated Personal Development System (I.P.D.S.). Appendices cover: Highways Agency/Fire and Rescue Service memorandum of understanding; training and general information; and emergency services personnel (ESP) aide mâmoire. The CD-ROM, "Vehicle extrication techniques", is a multi media guide to rescue tool handling and extrication techniques.

Training for firefighters must be planned so that they experience reasonably realistic situations in which they encounter the hazards likely to be met in operational incidents, whilst the risk of resultant injury is controlled and all unnecessary risks avoided. One hazard is that of high environmental temperature, which can present an acute risk of burn injury (eg through contact with hot debris) and a less acute risk of physiological heat stress; it is this latter risk which is addressed in this document. The guidance is based on a study of environmental temperatures during training sessions, together with the resultant body temperatures of those taking part. Measures outlined include: pre-exposure procedures; monitoring and control procedures during training; post-exposure control. An appendix describes the effects of heat on the body and heat-related disorders.

Deliberate training in firefigher rescue and survival is a field that is new to many in the fire service and private industry alike. For those firefighters and company officers assigned to a Rapid Intervention Team (RIT), not making the correct split-second decisions--such as immediately recognizing changes in fire behavior or failing to evaluate their level of SCBA air--can result in the loss of the lives of the entire team. In an effort to reduce the number of line-of-duty firefighting injuries and deaths, while at the same time being proactive in the fire service training and leadership, authors Richard Kolomay and Robert Hoff have drawn upon their combined 50+ years of firefighting experience to put together this comprehensive guide. Key Features & Benefits - Provides an awareness of firefighter safety and proactive fire service training - Describes various types of serious firefighter injuries and fatality incidents during emergency incident operations - Details recommended Rapid Intervention Team operating methods and procedures, as well as how to activate a Rapid Intervention Team
