Excerpt from Fifty-Eighth Annual Report of the City of Rochester, New Hampshire: For the Year Ending December 31st, Nineteen Hundred and Forty-Nine This new town was composed of settlers of whom a part were immigrants. All of us except the full-blooded Indians are immigrants or descendants of immigrants. A portion of these settlers came from the section of New Hampshire which is now Dover, and the township was composed of approximately sixty families. We learn from early history that our early settlers had their many difficulties, as this was an area where the Indians traveled from Great Bay to Winnipesaukee and the north coun try; and a great deal of time was taken for the building of garrisons and the clearing of land. This was a period which lasted for many years, when the thrill of horror ran through the community, caused by Indian attacks and by hard labor from the improving of land to make an agricultural area. Now, as a town we progressed. Industries along our two rivers were built up. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Sixty- rst Annual Report of the City of Rochester, New Hampshire: For the Year Ending December 31st, Nineteen Hundred and Fifty-Two In his speech at Faneuil Hall in Boston, Daniel Webster said: Men hang out signs indicative of their respective trades: shoemakers hang out a gigantic shoe, a jeweler a monster watch, and a dentist a gold tooth. But in the mountains of New Hamp shire, Almighty God has hung out a sign to show that here he makes men. It is our duty as city officials to maintain this heritage, as advertised by continuing to provide the facilities necessary to make Rochester not only a progressive city but a community in which one wants to live. The Charter of our city has been amended during the years so that, as of today, we have only four departments. The Fire and Police are departments for the protection of our citizens and those who are guests in this community; our Public Works for the maintenance of our highways, sewers, and the operation of our Water Division; and our Department of Education. In short, gentlemen, I shall advocate business methods in all our transactions and trust that you will help me to perform the same. Excerpt from Sixty-Ninth Annual Report of the City of Rochester, New Hampshire: For the Year Ending December 31, 1960 We have as our primary concern all the citizens of Roches ter. The elections are over and we should forget them. Let us all remember that we were elected to serve all the people. It should be kept constantly in mind that future proposals should be measured by the yardstick whether or not this is good for the entire city and not for the benefit of a special few. As the holding of our present tax rate is of major concern to all of us, we should endeavor to trim our expenditures to meet revenue income. The efficiency and equity of our assessment can be improved by having a full time assessor. I trust that you will give this important question a great deal of consideration. The Industrial Committee has made great progress and this vital program should be continued for our mutual benefit. The Planning Board has assumed great importance during the past year. As the program ends in April, I believe we should continue it with a part or full time director. The Public Works Department has its many problems. There is always need to replace equipment and a penny wise and pound foolish program is not workable, as we have seen.
