Abstract: This bibliography of materials related to minority youth covers the years 1950 to 1979 and includes materials on values, family and socialization practices, self-concept, cooperation and competition as achievement factors, sex roles, role models, peer influences, teacher/student expectations, and instructional strategies. The chapter on cooperation and competition (p. 162-176) provides a good historical listing of materials, many of which have not been included in this annotated bibliography because of the date of the research.

In the United States, some populations suffer from far greater disparities in health than others. Those disparities are caused not only by fundamental differences in health status across segments of the population, but also because of inequities in factors that impact health status, so-called determinants of health. Only part of an individual's health status depends on his or her behavior and choice; community-wide problems like poverty, unemployment, poor education, inadequate housing, poor public transportation, interpersonal violence, and decaying neighborhoods also contribute to health inequities, as well as the historic and ongoing interplay of structures, policies, and norms that shape lives. When these factors are not optimal in a community, it does not mean they are intractable: such inequities can be mitigated by social policies that can shape health in powerful ways. Communities in Action: Pathways to Health Equity seeks to delineate the causes of and the solutions to health inequities in the United States. This report focuses on what communities can do to promote health equity, what actions are needed by the many and varied stakeholders that are part of communities or support them, as well as the root causes and structural barriers that need to be overcome.

This book discusses the trajectories of minority students’ acculturation in terms of school and family-related characteristics that are influential for school adjustment of minority youths. The process that ethnic minority youth undergo while adjusting to the mainstream culture is known as acculturation. Acculturation outcomes in the school context can be measured in terms of students’ psychological well-being and their academic performance. For minority youth, family and school are the two main contexts of acculturation. The aim of the book is to provide multifaceted insights into the challenges that minority students, as well as their parents and teachers, encounter during the acculturation process, and to illustrate the interplay between school and family related factors of minority youths’ school adjustment. Research teams from Germany, Hungary, Israel, Russia, Switzerland, and USA report findings from empirical studies on acculturation and school adjustment of minority students in schools of their respective countries. This book was originally published as a special issue of the journal, Intercultural Education.
In many domains one encounters "systems" of interacting elements, elements that interact more forcefully the closer they may be. The historical example upon which the theory offered in this book is based is that of magnetization as it is described by the Ising model. At the vertices of a regular lattice of sites, atoms "choos e" an orientation under the influence of the orientations of the neighboring atoms. But other examples are known, in physics (the theories of gasses, fluids, .. J, in biology (cells are increasingly likely to become malignant when their neighboring cells are malignant), or in medecine (the spread of contagious deseases, geogenetics, .. .), even in the social sciences (spread of behavioral traits within a population). Beyond the spacial aspect that is related to the idea of "neighboring" sites, the models for all these phenomena exhibit three common features: - The unavoidable ignorance about the totality of the phenomenon that is being studied and the presence of a great number of often unsuspected factors that are always unquantified lead inevitably to stochastic models. The concept of accident is very often inherent to the very nature of the phenomena considered, so, to justify this procedure, one has recourse to the physicist's principle of indeterminacy, or, for example, to the factor of chance in the Mendelian genetics of phenotypes.
Synopsis: This book examines collaboration between teachers, administrators, student support specialists, community agencies, and service providers to improve outcomes for students with complex learning needs.
