DOWNLOAD EBOOKThe brain-gut connection has been increasingly implicated in biopsychosocial well-being. While there are numerous factors that directly and indirectly impact on how the gut and the brain interact, there is a growing awareness that gastrointestinal conditions need to be viewed and treated as part of a multidisciplinary approach. Psychogastroenterology for Adults: A Handbook for Mental Health Professionals is the first book to provide mental health professionals with an evidence-based, practical guide for working with patients living with gastrointestinal conditions. Timely and accessibly written, this book provides a unique, comprehensive introduction to psychogastroenterology, offering a step-by-step guide to evidence-based psychological treatment protocols. Broad in scope and expertise, the book is divided into four parts. It opens with an overview of the field, moving on to outline psychological concerns and conditions in gastroenterological (GI) cohorts. Further, it covers various approaches to psychogastroenterology, including psychopharmacological and eHealth practices. In closing, the book looks to the future, providing guidance on supervision in psychogastroenterology, and exploring challenges in the field. Written by experts in the field, this book will be an indispensable resource for those who wish to enhance their knowledge and practice of psychogastroenterology in the mental health profession, including psychologists, psychiatrists, psychosomatic medicine specialists, nurses and social workers.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKGynecologists cannot fulfill the commitments of their profession without being psychosomatically oriented. Nevertheless, this field needs methodology and scientific thinking just as does any other subspeciality in clinical medicine. Although practiced by all gyne cologists, creative work is needed in order to develop the various aspects properly and to establish postgraduate training on a firm and sound basis. For this purpuse the European Symposia have been planned by several European Researchers on Psychosomatic Obstetrics and Gynecology in order to stimulate and integrate clinical scientific data and therapeutic skills in the bio-psycho-social field of obstetrics and gynecology. The first European Symposium in Leuven 1985 concentrated on the psychosomatic aspects of infertility and high risk pregnancies. This second European Symposium in Bad Sackingen centered around disturbed body perception, disturbances of the menstrual cycle, climacteric syndrome, and senium. These topics were elaborated in main lectures and workshops held by outstanding researchers in this rapidly expanding field. The second European Symposium on Psychosomatic Obstetrics and Gynecology was organized by the German Society of Psycho somatic Obstetrics and Gynecology, supported by the University Hospital Freiburg/Br., the University Hospital Basel, and the Women's District Hospital in Bad Sackingen.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKThis volume contains fifteen papers by invited participants delivered at the NATO International Workshop on Coping and Health held March 26 through March 30, 1979, at the Rockefeller Foundation's Bellagio study and Conference Center, Bellagio, Italy. The editors of the book were co-directors of the workshop as well as participants. The conference was a small conference consisting of only 20 scientists and was designed to be an intensive period of exchange of ideas dealing with a range of topics varying from experimental models of coping through coping and its psychosomatic implications. The exceptional beauty of the Bellagio Study and Conference Center, the hospitality of the staff at the Conference Center as well as the support of the administrative staff of the Rockefeller Foundation, combined with the intensity and enthusiasm of the participants made the conference a most memorable one for those who attended it. A special thanks is in order for the help and assistance of Dr. B. A. Bayraktar, Executive Officer of Human Factors Program, Scientific Affairs Division, NATO, and Miss Susan Garfield, Program Director of the Rockefeller Foundation. Needless to say, without their participation and help at all points in the organization and planning of this conference, the conference would not have occurred.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKThis volume is an encyclopedic book on psychosomatic disorders, written for neurologists, psychiatrists, psychologists, psychiatric social workers, and other mental and physical health professionals. It could be used as a textbook in advanced training programs for the above-mentioned profes sions. It covers the entire field of mind-body issues in psychology and psychiatry and related areas of clinical medicine. The mind-body relationship is a two-way street. Anxiety, fear, anger, and other emotional states can produce physiological changes such as tears, elevated heart rate, and diarrhea. When these changes affect one's health, they belong to the province of psychosomatic medicine. On the other hand, the intake of alcohol and other substances can affect such psycholog ical processes as thinking and mood. When the intake of substances is helpful, they belong to the province of psychopharmacology. The substances that are hurtful and adversely affect one's mental health belong to the category of addictions and drug abuse. All these issues are somatopsychic. The present volume does not deal with somatopsychic phenomena no matter what effect they may have. It deals with the physical effects of psychological issues, and only with those that cause harm to the human body. Thus, it describes and analyzes psychosomatic disorders. It is divided into four major parts: theoretical viewpoints, etiological considerations, the psychosomatic diseases, and treatment methods.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKIt is a privilege to introduce this unusual book. In a time when most docotrs practise medicine as a technical application of the natural sciences, the authors, both experienced clinicians, combine the use of modem techniques with human understanding and psychological management of their patients in the practice of internal medicine. Many of these patients suffer from "psychosomatic disorders", i. e. diseases in which emotional stresses play a major role in the production of the symptoms and/or signs. But just because such a large proportion of all illnesses seen by physicians fall within this category (whether functional or organic), this book is not only a guide to the theory of psychosomatic medicine; it describes the way in which the authors deal with patients in their daily practice. Based on many years of clinical experience and a critical appraisal of the literature, they have developed and tested an approach to what they describe as "psychological management". This is partly based on psychological and psychiatric principles but differs from specialised "psychotherapy" and can be learned and practised by physicians in combination with their technical medical treatment. Extensive attention is paid to the stresses, ambivalences and incompatibilities which the patients encounter in their communication with the key figures in their family and at work, and to which they have unsuccesfully tried to adapt without having been able to solve the problems actively.
