This factsheet on EU cooperation on R&I with Africa will be based on a pre-existing factsheet on the same topic, prepared at the time of the publication of the HE WP for 2021-2022, on the Africa Initiative comprising a set of calls for proposals with a dedicated funding requiring or encouraging participation of African entities. This second factsheet was prepared late in 2022 to allow to present the new Africa Initiative II contained in the then forthcoming WP for 2023-2024. The factsheet was not in the end published. The proposal is to update it to communicate in a succinct way with African partners about opportunities under Africa Initiative II and the AU-EU Innovation Agenda to be adopted by the EU-AU R&I 2nd Ministerial meeting in Addis Ababa on 13 June. It should be published by that date.

"Africa is a continent with a great pool of untapped scientific talent. The brain-power is there, but the means to translate it into scientific input for socio-economic development need further enhancement. Increasing S & T capacity through cooperation will give African countries and people the tools and skills to create/adapt and disseminate knowledge to mitigate current weaknesses. It will help Africa to develop its resources and provide ways and means to deliver prosperity and sustainable development to its people. Policy measures to promote and support sustainable S & T capacity building relevant to Africa's economic growth are increasingly undertaken within Africa. Africans themselves have set their own priorities for S & T. The EU supports and contributes to the realisation of Africa's S & T objectives. This brochure outlines the development of European S & T cooperation with Africa over the recent past. It illustrates the link between the political framework, the commitments, the toolkit of mechanisms available and the action on the ground."--Editor.

Africa–Europe Cooperation and Digital Transformation explores the opportunities and challenges for cooperation between Africa and Europe in the digital sphere. Digitalisation and digital technologies are not only essential for building competitive and dynamic economies; they transform societies, pose immense challenges for policymakers, and increasingly play a pivotal role in global power relations. Digital transformations have had catalytic effects on African and European governance, economies, and societies, and will continue to do so. The COVID-19 pandemic has already accelerated the penetration of digital tools all over the globe and is likely to be perceived as a critical juncture in how and to what purpose the world accepts and uses new and emerging technologies. This book offers a holistic analysis of how Africa and Europe can manage and harness digital transformation as partners in a globalised world. The authors shed light on issues ranging from economic growth, youth employment, and gender, to regulatory frameworks, business environments, entrepreneurship, and interest-driven power politics. They add much-needed perspectives to the debates that shape the two continents’ digital transformation and innovation environments. This book will interest practitioners working in the areas of innovation, digital technologies, and digital entrepreneurship, as well as students and scholars of international relations. It will also be relevant for policymakers, regulators, decision-makers, and leaders in Africa and Europe.

This open access book presents the proceedings of the 2nd Africa-EU Renewable Energy Research and Innovation Symposium (RERIS 18), held in Maseru, Lesotho in January 2018. The symposium aimed to foster research cooperation on renewable energy between Africa and Europe – in academia, as well as the private and public sectors. Addressing thematic areas such as • Grid-connected renewable energy; • Decentralised renewable and household energy solutions; • Energy socioeconomics; and • Promotion of energy research, innovation, education and entrepreneurship, the book brings together contributions from academics and practitioners from the EU and Africa to enable mutual learning and knowledge transfer – a key factor in boosting sustainable development in the African renewable energy market. It also plays a significant role in promoting African renewable energy research, which helps to secure energy supply in both rural and urban areas and to increase generation capacities and energy system resilience. This book is an invaluable resource for academics and professionals across the renewable energy spectrum.

This book examines the establishment and implementation of the AfCFTA, which is the largest free trade area globally, covering 54 African countries. It explores how this initiative has the potential to reshape Africa-EU relations by promoting intra-African trade, economic integration, and diversification, as well as inter-regional trade. Both continents have potential to serve as global actors in reshaping the global order in ways that can affect how multilateralism foster inclusive development. However, whether this will happen would be a function of how the EU and AU define their interests and relationship. Leon Mwamba Tshimpaka is Senior Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the Centre for the Study of Governance Innovation (GovInn) and the SARChI Research Chair in the Political Economy of Migration in the SADC Region in the Department of Political Sciences of the University of Pretoria, South Africa. Samuel Ojo Oloruntoba is Assistant Professor at the Institute of African Studies, Carleton University, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada and Honorary Professor at the Thabo Mbeki African School of Public and International Affairs, University of South Africa, where he was previously an Associate Professor. .
