DOWNLOAD EBOOKThis book contains a multicultural and multifaceted study of ideologies and conflicts related to the complex realities and fictions of Nation and Identity represented in contemporary literature written in English. The history and present time of the United Kingdom, the British Empire and North America provide vast fields of research which have been explored by our selection of authors. Their interests range from the moral and personal consequences of modern nationalist conflicts to the memories of old racial confrontations on the British soil. Readers will find analyses and reflections on the individual’s pursuit of identity in a challenging environment that covers more than two centuries of mainly Western civilization and abound in national dilemmas, social concerns, authoritarian legacies, and problematic postcolonial hybridizations. Short stories, novels, plays and poems by Irish, American, English, Nigerian, and Scottish writers will enable readers to consider the diverse approaches, propositions and debates the issues raised by Nation and Identity are being dealt with.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKThe history of translation has focused on literary work but this book demonstrates the way in which political control can influence and be influenced by translation choices. New research and specially commissioned essays give access to existing research projects which at present are either scattered or unavailable in English.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKModes of Censorship and Translation articulates a variety of scholarly and disciplinary perspectives and offers the reader access to the widening cultural debate on translation and censorship, including cross-national forms of cultural fertilization. It is a study of censorship and its patterns of operation across a range of disciplinary settings, from media to cultural and literary studies, engaging with often neglected genres and media such as radio, cinema and theatre. Adopting an interdisciplinary and transnational approach and bringing together contributions based on primary research which often draws on unpublished archival material, the volume analyzes the multi-faceted relationship between censorship and translation in different national contexts, including Italy, Spain, Great Britain, Greece, Nazi Germany and the GDR, focusing on the political, ideological and aesthetic implications of censorship, as well as the hermeneutic play fostered by any translational act. By offering innovative methodological interpretations and stimulating case studies, it proposes new readings of the operational modes of both censorship and translation. The essays gathered here challenge current notions of the accessibility of culture, whether in overtly ideological and politically repressive contexts, or in seemingly 'neutral' cultural scenarios.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKThe present study has been divided into five general chapters each of which is centred around a basic issue related to ethnic identities. This central issue may be more or less specific, largely depending on its nature and on the corpus it comprises: for example, chapter two, which bears the general title "the old country and the New World", is naturally the most extensive because of the great scope of this theme and the number of works it involves, two novels and a considerable number of stories, including the very long "Man in the Drawer. By contrast, the last chapter, entitled "Beyond Race into Myth: Seeking the Liberation of the Self", is logically the shortest because its focus is restricted to a particular function of ethnic identities, metaphorically speaking, in Malamud's fantastic works, the novel "God's Grace" and one short story. Similar proportions between length, complexity of theme and corpus treated are maintained in the three central chapters, which focus on ethnic aspects which are neither as general as chapter two nor as specific as chapter six.
