As a "middle market" collector for more than 25 years, I have gained considerable insight into the market for American antiques through meticulous research, conversations with leading dealers and auction house specialists, and my own personal experience. Over that time I have been able to pierce the veil that masks the secrets of the auction houses and dealer community. This book sheds light on that mysterious domain by recounting a series of personal collecting experiences, in order to share what I have learned with the buyers and collectors of the future. While the internet has brought transparency to numerous markets that historically operated in the shadows, the market for American antiques remains opaque to all but professional dealers and major collectors. Subtle differences between similar objects, carefully disguised repairs and restorations, material that has been through auction without selling -- all of these things can have a dramatic effect on the value of an object but are imperceptible to the average auction-goer or retail buyer. The lack of transparency in these and other areas, including the inner workings of the auctions themselves, results in many buyers overpaying for antiques that are not entirely what they purport to be. To date there has been no attempt to write a book that encompasses both the aesthetic and financial sides of the antiques trade. Books like Fine Points of American Furniture and The Israel Sack Collection discuss and depict outstanding examples from an aesthetic point of view, while Fake, Fraud or Genuine discusses how to recognize objects that have been modified or made up from scratch. But none includes a discussion of the financial implications of finding a masterpiece or a made-up piece and everything in between. In that respect the book will augment the existing literature on the subject, making it an important addition to the available research.
