Breaking Out of Prison with Jesus explains the challenges that ex-offenders face as they reenter society. The central theme of the book highlights how a personal saving faith in the Lord Jesus Christ is the only path to successfully transition out of prison. Christian Aftercare Ministries (CAM) provides the spiritual and physical support as well as accountability to help men and women successfully reenter society. Breaking Out of Prison with Jesus describes the key steps that puts the ex-offender on a path to a positive Christian life after prison. CAM and its support network help and encourage clients to find a good job and safe housing, as well as connect with a Bible-believing church where they live. Attending Bible studies with supportive Christian leaders is also critical. A number of prison chaplains, local pastors, and laypeople volunteer both in prisons and on the outside to provide these opportunities. CAM's strategy is to have each client know and experience a strong Christian support structure surrounding them. Relying on Jesus and their faith is at the foundation of their success. Ex-offenders face many challenges on the outside. Falling into old habits and old relationships can sometimes put them right back in prison. Breaking out of that cycle through their faith in Jesus and the support of ministries like CAM is possible, as the many success stories highlighted in the book illustrate. CAM also desires young people to see that serving Jesus in prison ministry is one of the greatest blessings and to get involved in sharing the Gospel in prisons and jails and through aftercare ministries like CAM.

Dr. Covert uses his experiences as both police officer and state prison chaplain to examine the environment of the incarcerated—people who are often forgotten by society. He emphasizes particular areas of inmate stress and how they impact upon the inmate's spiritual formation and the role of the Church in offering encouragement, healing, and transformation. He calls for staff education, environmental improvement, and a pastoral presence that facilitates rehabilitation and hope, rather than discouragement and punishment. (197pp. Masthof Press, 2022.)

Show the incarcerated how to find forgiveness in unforgiving surroundings As the prison population in the United States increases by more than 1,000 inmates each week, prison ministry programs must have a working blueprint for dealing with the shame, humiliation, hate, and loneliness of incarceration at both the adult correctional and juvenile detention/probation levels. Prison Ministry: Hope Behind the Wall demonstrates how a ministry can adapt Latin American Liberation theology to address oppression and bring prisoners into the community of Christ. Author Dennis Pierce, former chaplain at the Joliet Correctional Center in Illinois (where the Fox Network's 2005 Prison Break series is filmed), presents a functioning approach to forgiveness and reconciliation, combining pastoral counseling, Christian education, Bible studies, and worship to help inmates develop self-esteem and an overall feeling of self-worth through compassion and empathy. Prison Ministry: Hope Behind the Wall provides an alternative resource on our prison system for chaplains, pastors, priests, and students working in theology, ethics, or counseling. Instead of the usual descriptive narratives of inmates’ lives or discussions of statistical approaches, this unique book combines a theological model with a viable programmatic approach to confront the oppression of incarceration and reverse its effects. The book looks at the vital issues facing juveniles in the criminal justice system (the transition from county jail to a correctional facility, victimization, rejection, under-stimulation, homosexual rape) and examines the creation of non-threatening niches to address coping structures needed to move toward forgiveness and reconciliation. Prison Ministry: Hope Behind the Wall examines: meeting the incarcerated defining prison’s emotional ethos dealing with human breakdowns oppression in maximum-security prison components of empowerment needed for prison ministry Prison Ministry: Hope Behind the Wall also includes case studies of four inmates, an extensive bibliography, a glossary of prison terms, sample Bible studies, and sermon topics. The book is invaluable for anyone dealing with incarcerated youth and young adults in civilian or military correctional or juvenile detention facilities.

The guiding purpose of this project is to develop a model to help congregations become re-entry churches. It is the development of a series of seminars to help congregations provide a deliberative type of pastoral care, Christological in nature, to all those impacted by mass incarceration. This project targets the highest racial and age percentage of men and women in prison. It leans to, but not limited to nonviolent crimes, with an overall focus on equipping the church to receive and reach out to anyone on the margins. It seeks to address the greatest moral and racial injustice of our time, mass incarceration with the church as a way to turn the tide. This project begins in a city overwhelmed with churches whom all know the impact of racism and incarceration. Goldsboro, NC where the crime rate is higher than the average of the state. Inside this city is a congregation, making a difference in the world. Greenleaf Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), is audacious enough to uplift the Kingdom of God inside the church but also in its surrounding community. It served as a pilot for this project for the work they were already doing but also to help them respond to the new construction of a prison near their church. The anticipated outcome that will evolve from this project is that local churches would become more knowledgeable about the trauma of incarceration that is already embedded in their churches. More directly, they will gain a deeper understanding of the politics of incarceration while, juxtaposing biblical anthropology verse criminal anthropology. Doing so will lead in creating a climate of acceptance, openness, honesty, and support. Lastly, they will gain a stronger appreciation of pastoral care to the poor, to the marginalized in respect to the birth, the life, the death and return of Jesus Christ. I believe from a Chaplain's perspective that if the church is authentic in serving God, we will not forget those impacted by mass incarceration and will utilize every ministry to radically encourage a new era in the church beyond prison ministry.
