The essays here underscore Herbert Ekwe-Ekwe's continuing optimism about the possibilities of Africans constructing post-"Berlin-states" as the launch pad to transform the topography of the African renaissance. Readings from Reading is a timely publication, coming on the eve of the historic January 2011 referendum in south Sudan in which the people of the region will choose to vote to restore their national independence or get stuck hopelessly in the Sudan, the first of the "Berlin-states" that Africans tragically "inherited" in January 1956. Ekwe-Ekwe insists that the contemporary Africa state, imposed on Africans by a band of European conqueror states and currently run by what the author describes as a "shard of disreputable African regimes to exploit and despoil the continent's human and material resources," cannot serve African interests. The legacy, as this study demonstrates, has indeed been catastrophic: "The [African] overseers pushed the states into even deeper depths of genocidal and kakistocratic notoriety in the past 54 years as the grim examples of particularly Nigeria, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the Sudan ... depressingly underscore. 15 million Africans have been murdered by African-led regimes in these states and elsewhere in Africa since the Igbo genocide of 1977-1970." "Mi Vida...en uniforme" in English means "My Life ...in uniform" and is a sequel to my first book titled "Mi Calle, Mi Barrio,Mi Pueblo" which again translated to English means "My Street, My Neighborhood, My Town". Each one of those books narrates a distinct phase of my life with all the anecdotes, persons, and situations that formed me as a person. Mi Vida starts where Mi Calle ends and walks the reader while having a conversation, as good friends do, through my life as a college student and then as a United States Army Officer for twenty one years which included a war, Viet Nam, and a series of very challenging and most of them rewarding tours of duty around the world. Those years were not easy but they gave me a profound insight into life and those instances,some very happy and some very sad, are the ones that I wish to share with the reader. In his comprehensive and vibrant picture of baseball in Cuba, Milton H. Jamail explores the sport's relationship to U.S. baseball. Jamail, whose personal love of the game matches that of the Cubans, examines the roots and traditions of baseball on the island and explains why Cubans play such excellent baseball. His analysis of the development of Cuban baseball after the 1959 takeover by Fidel Castro includes a detailed description of the formation of the Cuban amateur baseball system that has dominated international competitions for more than three decades. Before 1961, when the U.S. government severed diplomatic relations with Cuba and Castro abolished professional baseball, Cuba provided the bulk of the foreign players in the major leagues (more than one hundred since the color barrier was lifted in 1947). Major league interest in Cuban baseball remains high, Jamail notes, as he examines the changes necessary, both in the United States and Cuba, to return Cuban ballplayers to professional baseball in the United States. He discusses Cuban defectors, including Liván Hernández, and describes the intrigue surrounding agent Joe Cubas's courting of Cuban players and his attempts to spirit them away when the Cuban national team plays outside the country. An academic trained in Latin American politics, Jamail has spent twelve years as a Spanish-speaking journalist writing about Latinos and baseball. To write this book, he conducted extensive interviews with baseball officials, journalists, players, and fans in Cuba, as well as Cuban players who have defected. He also talked to scouts and front office people from U.S. baseball organizations.
