DOWNLOAD EBOOKThe Committee's major inquiry into Energy in Wales was published on 20 July 2006 (HC 867-I 2005-06) did not cover open cast mining. However there was a proviso that "should open cast mining in Wales be extended further, an in-depth assessment of the environmental impact of that process would be worthwhile". Following representations by the Opnecast Coal Committee of Wales and groups opposed to such developments the Committee decided to undertake this follow-up inquiry. It also took evidence on the development of sustainable technologies and measures to encourage microgeneration.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKThroughout the world, the threat of climate change is pressing governments to accelerate the deployment of technologies to generate low carbon electricity or heat. But this is frequently leading to controversy, as energy and planning policies are revised to support new energy sources or technologies (e.g. offshore wind, tidal, bioenergy or hydrogen energy) and communities face the prospect of unfamiliar, often large-scale energy technologies being sited near to their homes. Policy makers in many countries face tensions between 'streamlining' planning procedures, engaging with diverse publics to address what is commonly conceived as 'NIMBY' (not in my back yard) opposition, and the need to maintain democratic, participatory values in planning systems. This volume provides a timely, international review of research on public engagement, in contexts of diverse, innovative energy technologies. Public engagement is conceived broadly - as the interaction between how developers and other key actors engage with publics about energy technologies (including assumptions held about the methods used, such as the provision of financial benefits or the holding of deliberative events), and how individuals and groups engage with energy policies and projects (including indirectly through the media and directly through emotional and behavioural responses). The book's contributors are leading experts in the UK, Europe, North and South America and Australia drawn from a variety of relevant social science disciplinary perspectives. The book makes a significant contribution to our existing knowledge, as well as providing interested professionals, policymakers and members of the public with a timely overview of the critical issues involved in public engagement with low carbon energy technologies.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKIn the years between the first and this second edition, renewable energy has come of age; it makes good sense, good government and good business. This book considers the unchanging principles of renewable energy technologies alongside modern application and case studies. In this second edition, the presentation of the fundamentals has been improved throughout, and chapters on economics and institutional factors have been added. Likewise, sections on environmental impact have been added to each technology chapter. Renewable Energy Resources supports multi-disciplinary.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKThis edited book is about child poverty in Wales, specifically in a local school-community that identified its causes and effects, the challenges it poses for schooling future generations, and a series of local solutions that personify Wales’s devolved governments’ social democratic social imaginary. These responses all markedly contrast those of conservative UK Westminster governments espousing neoliberal logics for a global economy in consecutive prime ministers’ hallmark policies – Thatcher’s de-industrialisation, Cameron’s austerity, Johnson’s Brexit and Global Britain agenda, Truss’s Net Zero agenda, and Sunak’s new economic agenda in an effort to reunite the Conservative Party and win back public as well as business confidence. These policy agendas are invariably policy failures that play out for children and young people in their lived experiences of poverty and inequalities, and that find expression in social emergencies and humanitarian disasters apropos the cost of living crises, for example, as documented in this volume.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKThe UK Climate Change Act was the first case of a country implementing blanket legally binding long-term emissions reduction targets in order to combat climate change. This book provides the first accessible and in-depth analysis of the UK’s complex Climate Change Act framework, presenting the discussion in a clear and interdisciplinary manner designed to open the workings of the challenging framework to a broad audience. It discusses the political ‘story’ surrounding the framework, and its treatment in scholarly environmental literature; analyses the technical content of the Act; explores the framework’s international significance, and its internal ‘subnational’ dimensions and impact, engaging the UK’s devolved jurisdictions of Northern Ireland, Scotland, and Wales. This first, much-needed interdisciplinary treatment of the framework is both introductory and analytical in nature and will be of interest to scholars, practitioners and general readers of environmental studies, policy and governance.

DOWNLOAD EBOOK"A brilliant, insightful primer ... A must-read for anyone interested in the future of this country, whatever their view." – Matt Chorley "A thorough investigation." – Carwyn Jones, First Minister of Wales 2009–2018 "An accessible and refreshing read, whichever side of the debate you are on." – Leanne Wood, leader of Plaid Cymru 2012–2018 "This is a comprehensive, intelligent and much-needed guide to the issues from one of Wales's leading journalists." – Richard Sambrook, emeritus professor at Cardiff University, former director of BBC News "Highly recommended." – Martin Shipton, political editor-at-large, Western Mail "Lucid and compelling." – Professor Richard Wyn Jones, director of Cardiff University's Wales Governance Centre "An engaging and clear-eyed analysis of what is at stake when we talk about independence for Wales." – Mark Blyth, director of the William R. Rhodes Center for International Economics and Finance, Brown University *** Should Wales leave the UK? It's a conversation that has – unfairly – been all but disregarded by many, including some of the Welsh themselves, with all the focus on their Celtic cousins in Scotland. But independence movements are gaining momentum across Europe, and Wales will be a key voice in these debates. Support for Welsh autonomy is at an all-time high, with the latest polls suggesting as many as one in three are in favour. This is not just unprecedented; it is all but revolutionary. Scotland's 2014 referendum taught us that once the independence genie is out of the bottle, it does not go back in. Meanwhile, the Brexit campaign demonstrated that these arguments come with inflated claims, misinformation and scaremongering that can easily poison a complex debate. In Independent Nation, Will Hayward brings nuance back to the arena for this crucial national conversation. Brimming with interviews from experts and painting a detailed, colourful picture of the realities of life in Wales – from extreme poverty and disconnected infrastructure to expensive urban regeneration and cafés of Gavin and Stacey fame – this is an open-eyed look at the truths and falsehoods around the country's future. Impartial, informed and thoroughly entertaining, Independent Nation raises the standard of debate around an issue that will affect us all.
