The majority of energy consumption in the United States is derived from fossil fuels; renewable energy consumption has a very low supply rate: only 1% from solar energy and 5% from geothermal energy. Residential and commercial buildings consume more than a third of the energy used in the United States. Space heating and air conditioning take 43% energy consumption in residential buildings; heating, cooling and ventilation take 30% energy consumption in commercial buildings. The green building concept calls for more energy efficient and environmentally friendly practices to both new construction and in the retrofitting of an existing structure. This research examines two techniques of green building practice and sustainability design for the new and retrofitting construction application. One is the study of combination solar and geothermal energy system in the buildings air conditioning system which can greatly reduce the energy consumption and improve combined system performance. The objective is to study the interaction of these geothermal and solar hybrid systems with the building system using a dynamic modular approach program TRNSYS. Three case studies have been investigated and compared. The second study was carried out to predict heat loss from house basements using several insulation materials and configurations. Heat transfer equation model with boundary conditions have been used. The objective of the simulation study was to select the most efficient material and the most appropriate configuration for insulation of buildings' basement.
