DOWNLOAD EBOOKExcerpt from Eligibility/Feasibility Study and Environmental Assessment for National Historic Trail Authorization: California and Pony Express Trails, Missouri, Iowa, Nebraska, Kansas, Colorado, Wyoming, Utah, Idaho, Nevada, California, Oregon Originally the act specified three categories of national trails: scenic trails, recreation trails, and connecting or side trails. In 1978, however, historic trails were added as another category. These various trails are defined as follows: National scenic trails are extended trails that are located to maximize outdoor recreation potential while providing for the conservation and enjoyment of nationally significant scenic, historical, natural, or cultural qualities of areas through which the trails pass. DOWNLOAD EBOOKExcerpt from National Historic Trail Feasibility Study and Environmental Assessment: Old Spanish Trail; New Mexico, Colorado, Utah, Arizona, Nevada, California Pioneered by Mexican trader Antonio Armijo in 1829, the Old Spanish Trail was a horse and burro pack route that connected Santa Fe and Los Angeles. In its early years, trappers, slavers, traders, and immigrants used parts or all of the Old Spanish Trail. Other variants of the trail developed as travelers sought adequate water, grazing, shorter distances, smoother terrain, and safer passage. Over time, multiple, parallel, and intertwined routes developed. Many of these routes followed older trails developed by American Indians, and later followed by Spanish, Mexican, and other euro-american explorers.
