Excerpt from New Elements of Operative Surgery, Vol. 2 of 3 Another source of extreme satisfaction to me will be in the reflection that the profession in after times, perhaps, may not be unwilling to bestow their oommen dation upon these efforts. But a still higher source of gratification I frankly confess, is that of the conviction, that in my attachment to a long-cherished, per sonal, and honored friend, preceptor and kinsman, and one whose eminent skill justly fills so large a Space in Surgical history, (dr. Mott, ) I may have been, as I pledged myself I would be, (see Vol. I instrumental both for him, and for his country, in rescuing the details of all his great and master operations, and discoveries, and improvements in surgical processes and principles, from that indistinctness into which they were necessarily passing, by his neglect, (culpa ble, it would be, but from his repugnance to self-laudation, ) to gather them toge ther as I now have done in these volumes, from the scattered Medical and Surgi cal periodicals and fugitive works, in which they had been briefly registered, successively as they emanated from his great practical mind, or were created ia to existence by his incomparable genius and consummate skill. Excerpt from Elements of Surgery The first edition Of the present Treatise was published at Edinburgh in 1831, some time prior to the author's removal to London. It was originally comprised in three volumes. A second impression, Of which this is a reprint, appeared at London in 1840, in a revised and improved form. The favourable reception which the publication has met with in this country, and the desire I have felt to introduce it into the school with which I am connected, as a text-book, have induced me to prepare it forthe American press with particular care. Among the additions, properly SO called, is an article on Strabismus, and another on Club-foot; two subjects, the former of which was entirely omitted in the English edition, and the latter discussed in a manner altogether incommensurate with the existing state Of our knowledge in regard to it. The notes are designed to serve as further illustrations of the text, or to supply deficiencies in relation to certain topics which have been passed lightly over by the author. They might have been extended to almost any number, and it would have afforded me no ordinary gratification, had it been consistent with the views and interests of my publishers, to present what might be considered as a tolerably fair outline of American surgery. For such an Object ample materials are extant, highly valuable in them selves, and eminently calculated, when they shall be properly embo died, to reflect credit upon the talents, enterprise, and dexterity of our surgeons. It need hardly be added, what is self-evident, that the editor Of a work is responsible to the public only SO far as his own labours are concerned. He adopts only in a general manner, without endorsing all, the views and opinions of his author. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Operative Surgery The following Work was undertaken in compliance with the advice of some professional friends, who equally felt with myself the want of a book on the subject of Operative Surgery, which might become, not simply a guide to the actual operation, and embrace the practical rules required to justify the appeal to the knife, but would embody, at the same time, such principles as should constitute a permanent guide to the practitioner of Operative Surgery, and without which, all claim to its scientific character is lost.
