DOWNLOAD EBOOKThe Survey 2015 assesses the region's outlook as it navigates through global uncertainties, providing policy options and strategies to sustain inclusive and sustainable growth. The report analyses a wide range of areas including economic growth, inflation, trade and investment, financial markets, inequality, employment, and environmental concerns. The special theme of Survey 2015 argues that although rapid economic growth in the Asia-Pacific region has been accompanied by significant declines in poverty rates, development is about more than growth and poverty. The report reviews trends and patterns of inclusive growth in the region and motivates why both the private and public sectors should do more to address existing inequalities. This edition comes in two parts, which will not be sold separately.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKSustainable Development Goal 8 calls for promoting sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth. These three aspects of economic growth correspond to the three pillars of sustainable development: economic resilience, social inclusiveness and environmental sustainability. The region has made tremendous progress on the economic front. However, economic inequality within and among the region's economies has increased, and rapid expansion of economic output has contributed to untenable levels of environmental degradation. Against this backdrop, the Survey shows that the current strong economic performance in the Asia-Pacific region provides an opportune time for governments to initiate policies that can make economies resilient, inclusive and sustainable. It contains analyses of such issues and explores available policy options.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKThe world’s developed economies are experiencing a sharp backlash against globalisation, and it appears to be contagious. Will Asia catch it next? Asia has seen spectacular growth in recent decades. It has benefited substantially from global trade, finance, openness and the rules-based international order. But much of the growth Asia has enjoyed has not been shared. It has not been inclusive growth. Inequality in Asia is among the highest in the world. The richest man in Vietnam now earns more in a single day than the poorest person does in a decade. Asia has far to go in making its societies more inclusive to women, ethnic minorities and the LGBT community. How can Asia reduce inequality? What are the forces that determine whether growth in the Asia Pacific is inclusive or not? And what can be done to make Asia’s growth more inclusive in the future? This book brings together the region’s leading thinkers to explore how to change Asia’s trajectory, before it is too late. The Pacific Trade and Development (PAFTAD) conference series has been at the forefront of analysing challenges facing the economies of East Asia and the Pacific since its first meeting in Tokyo in January 1968.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKThe Asia-Pacific region's impressive economic growth and remarkable achievements in poverty reduction have not succeeded in closing gaps in income between the rich and poor, nor the unequal access to, for example, health care and education among other basic services. These gaps disproportionately affect women and the most vulnerable segments of society. They also hamper inclusive growth, undermine social cohesion and contribute to unsustainable production and consumption patterns. In short, these social development gaps undermine efforts to achieving the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.Sustainable Social Development in Asia and the Pacific summarizes the social development gaps as countries in the region take steps to achieve the SDGs, and sketches out a broad regional agenda for a people-centred transformation, outlining some of the key priorities and resources needed. The policy simulations reported here clearly indicate that acceleration of economic growth alone would not address the remaining development gaps. Changing the development paradigm to ensure more decent jobs, complemented by broadened coverage of social protection and universal education and health care is critical for eliminating extreme poverty from the region and achieving the other SDGs. Asia and the Pacific is already the most dynamic region in the world. By harnessing the potential of its people, the region can also be at the forefront of a global social transformation for a prosperous, inclusive and sustainable future for all.
