Why are adivasis fighting the Narmada dam and other development projects in India today? Are adivasis 'ecologically noble savages' living in harmony with nature? What is the tribal relationship with nature today? How do people, whose struggles are the subject of theories of liberation and social change, perceive their own situation? Do their present circumstances allow adivasis to formulate a critique of 'development'?

Inspired by a conference held at Columbia U. in March 1992 (though the roster of contributors extends beyond those who participated in the conference), this volume emerges from an attempt to understand development and the resistance to it in the contemporary world. Its subject is the development efforts in the Narmada River valley in central and western India, particularly the Sardar Sarovar Project (SSP). The 17 chapters are organized into seven parts: introduction; overviews of the SSP; histories of resistance to the SSP; resettlement and rehabilitation; technical and environmental concerns and alternatives; the independent review; and politics and development. Paper edition (unseen), $24.95. Annotation copyright by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

This report attempts to introduce a prototype scoring system for the ecological status of rivers in India and illustrate it through the applications in several major river basins. This system forms part of the desktop environmental flow assessment and is based on a number of indicators reflecting ecological condition and sensitivity of a river. The unique aspect of this study is that it interprets, for the first time, the existing ecological information for Indian rivers in the context of environmental flow assessment. The report targets government departments, research institutions and NGOs which are engaged in environmental flow management and associated policy development, and suggests some subsequent steps in environmental flow work in India.

Entirely updated in the light of the recent World Commission on Dams Report, and responding to it, this new edition of Patrick McCully's now classic study shows why large dams have become such a controversial technology in both industrialized and developing countries. The book explains the history and politics of dam building worldwide and shows why large dams have become so controversial. It details the ecological and human impacts of large dams, and shows how the 'national interest' argument is used to legitimize uneconomic and unjust projects which benefit elites while impoverishing tens of millions, describes the technical, safety and economic problems of dam technology, the structure of the international dam-building industry, and the role played by international banks and aid agencies. It tells the story of the rapid growth of the international anti-dam movement, and recounts some of the most important anti-dam campaigns around the world. McCully shows how the dam lobby and governments have reacted to criticism by cosmetic 'greening' of the dam-building process, and through state repression outlines the alternatives to dams, and argues that their replacement by less destructive alternatives requires the opening up of the industry's practices to public scrutiny.

River Narmada is said to the lifeline of Central India. It provides drinking water, fertile plains, rich forests to the people there. Almost four states are benefitted by water supply for irrigation and drinking. Continuous anthropogenic activities have severely degraded the ecosystem of River Narmada. The research figures out the causes of degrading environment of river Narmada. The continuous water flow of once Perennial River is broken at numerous times of a year. The objective of the paper is to enlist different anthropogenic activities and identify their relation in degradation of ecosystem. A literature review based mapping is done to identify and map the various stressors. A review of literature to historically map events has been done. Mapping is done in GIS platform and linkages of causes and impacts are studied. Detail study of one site is done. Land use land cover changes are studied by satellite imagery and topographical sheets.
