Biblical in origin, the expression "eclipse of God" refers to the Jewish concept of hester panim, the act of God concealing his face as a way of punishing his disobedient subjects. Though this idea is deeply troubling for many people, in this book Martin Buber uses the expression hopefully—for a hiding God is also a God who can be found. First published in 1952, Eclipse of God is a collection of nine essays concerning the relationship between religion and philosophy. The book features Buber's critique of the thematically interconnected—yet diverse—perspectives of Soren Kierkegaard, Hermann Cohen, C.G. Jung, Martin Heidegger, and other prominent modern thinkers. Buber deconstructs their philosophical conceptions of God and explains why religion needs philosophy to interpret what is authentic in spiritual encounters. He elucidates the religious implications of the I-Thou, or dialogical relationship, and explains how the exclusive focus on scientific knowledge in the modern world blocks the possibility of a personal relationship with God. Featuring a new introduction by Leora Batnitzky, Eclipse of God offers a glimpse into the mind of one of the modern world’s greatest Jewish thinkers.

The condition Buber calls the "eclipse of God" is the reality that modern life and the teachings of many scholars have in many ways destroyed the opportunity for intimacy with an eternal, ever-present, Thou, or God. Based in part on a series of lectures he gave in the United States in 1951, this book examines Buber's interpretations of Western thinking and belief around this notion of lost intimacy or direct contact with the Divine, focusing particularly on the relationships between religion and philosophy, ethics, and Jungian psychology. This book was specifically written for all those who feel lost in a world dominated by ideologies that obscure God. It is hard to pinpoint one particular cause of how we feel in such Godforsaken times and places, but science is likely one of the main perpetrators, as some scientists use their scientific "authority" to churn out, with the speed of light, books that promote opinions and views that go far beyond their scientific expertise, and that rob people of any religious beliefs they might have. These prolific writers are inundating the book market, magazines, and the internet with their message that a state of conflict exists between science and religion, and that science is on the winning hand. They loudly broadcast through the megaphones of our society their anti-religious propaganda: (1) Since there was a Big Bang, there is no creation. (2) Because there is only matter, there can be no spirit. (3) There is no purpose in life, for randomness is all there is. (4) There is no God, only a god-gene. (5) Neurons are in complete charge, so the mind is an illusion. (6) Everything is relative, for objective truth just does not exist. (7) Morality is only a matter of personal opinions and preferences. (8) All in all, God is dead. If you wonder how you and your religious faith could ever survive in such an environment, this is the right book for you.

"We live in a World no longer under heaven. At least in most people's minds and imaginations that vision of reality has become little more than a caricature, conjuring up the saints and angels of baroque frescoes. And in the church only a hint remains of the power it once exercised in the hearts of believers". So begins A. J. Conyers in this provocative book, and suggests that the eclipse of heaven has resulted in a shallower view of life and death, in a loss of cultural and individual purpose, and in moral disarray. This is a powerful, persuasive plea to stop blocking heaven from our sight, and so to regain hope, meaning, and richer lives -- in this world and the one to come.
