Excerpt from Distribution of the Agricultural Exports of the United States, 1894-1898 The statistical tables embodied in the present bulletin have been compiled with the object of exhibiting in convenient form for compari son a complete statement of the quantities and values of the various agricultural products exported from the United States to each country of destination. The statistics given relate to the five fiscal years 1894 - 1898, and are based in every instance upon the official returns1 of exportation. As the tables in question include all the agricultural exports for the years mentioned, it has been possible, by summarizing the various items for each country, to show the total value of the farm produce shipped to every one of the several destinations. So far as is known, the sum mary figures thus obtained comprise the first complete statement of the total values of American agricultural exports, by countries, that has been published. Excerpt from Sources of the Agricultural Imports of the United States, 1894-1898 China was fifth in importance among the sources of our agricultural imports, furnishing nearly 5 per cent of the total, with an average yearly value of Tea and silk were the principal items. Of the tea imported during 1891 - 1898, more than one-half came from China. Other Chinese products received in considerable quantities were wool, hides, Opium, and rice. Our agricultural imports from Japan in the period mentioned were nearly as large as those from China, the average yearly value being Silk was decidedly the most important item. About one-half of our importations of this product for 1894-1898 came from Japan. Japan also furnished over a third Of the tea imported. Aside from silk and tea, the only article of much importance was rice. From France we imported during 1894 - 1898 products of agriculture that averaged a year in total value.
