The Seven Sorrows of Mary are a popular Roman Catholic devotion. There are devotional prayers which consist of meditation on her Seven Sorrows. Examples include the Servite rosary, or the Chaplet of the Seven Sorrows of Our Lady. Also, there is a corresponding devotion to the Seven Joys of Mary. The term "Sorrowful and Immaculate Heart of Mary" refers to the combined devotion of both the Immaculate Heart and the Seven Sorrows of Mary as first used by the Franciscan Tertiary Berthe Petit. St. Alphonsus Maria de Liguori (September 27, 1696 – August 1, 1787) was an Italian Catholic bishop, spiritual writer, scholastic philosopher and theologian, and founder of the Redemptorists, an influential religious congregation. In 2001, the Vatican recognized the authenticity of the apparition of Our Lady in Kibeho, in Rwanda, Africa-a peaceful, ordinary region at the time of the apparitions in 1981-1989. Our Lady urged all people, not just Rwandans, to pray the Rosary, and the Devotion to the Seven Sorrows. This occurred 13 years prior to the Rwandan genocide of over a million people in that region. Much earlier, God revealed to a fourteenth-century saint, Bridget of Sweden (1303-1373), that seven great benefits accrue to those who worship Jesus Christ by the devotion to the seven sorrows of His mother, Mary. Devotion to the sorrows of Mary consists of brief daily meditation and prayers in memory of each of seven sorrows she experienced during earthly life. The gifts received through this meditative prayer are peace in the family, enlightenment about divine mysteries, Mary's consolation in suffering and assistance in work. She will obtain for them as much as they ask, as long as it accords with the will of Christ and not impede sanctification. Mary will defend them in spiritual battles against Satan and protect them throughout life. She will visibly help them at the moment of death; they will see her face. Mary obtained from her Son that those who spread devotion to her seven sorrows will die with sins forgiven, meriting eternal life in Heaven where she will be their consolation and joy. This book includes the chaplet of the Seven Sorrows of Mary, beautiful illustrations of Our Lady's sorrows, with Scriptural passages for each. It offers a brief history of the devotion, and simple explanation of how to meditate. It includes other devotions, prayers, novena, litany and hymn honoring the Sorrowful Mother and explains graces and indulgences associated with the devotion. These prayers offer tremendous comfort and remedy in times of trial and enkindle true love for Jesus Christ.

What better gift could Our Lady have given us than the Rosary? The Rosary is Sacred Braille in that it is a miraculous juxtaposition of a language of prayer we can feel with our hands, joining word to touch. It is the Rosary to which our fingers may cling, as our flesh craves something tangible. The decades of the Rosary can be thought about, and, quite literally, felt, at the same time. While contemporary society separates the idea of "thinking" and "feeling," Scripture unites all functions in the heart. If we meditate on the words, "Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart," (Lk 2:19) the thinking and feeling functions are joined. The Rosary, through engaging both thought and touch, unites our spiritual and physical natures; our thinking and feeling faculties.

As Catholics, we believe in the resurrection of the body. We profess it in our creed. We're taught that to bury and pray for the dead are corporal and spiritual works of mercy. We honor the dead in our Liturgy through the Rite of Christian burial. We do all of this, and more, because when Jesus Christ took on flesh for the salvation of our souls he also bestowed great dignity on our bodies. In Hope to Die: The Christian Meaning of Death and the Resurrection of the Body, Scott Hahn explores the significance of death and burial from a Catholic perspective. The promise of the bodily resurrection brings into focus the need for the dignified care of our bodies at the hour of death. Unpacking both Scripture and Catholic teaching, Hope to Die reminds us that we are destined for glorification on the last day. Our bodies have been made by a God who loves us. Even in death, those bodies point to the mystery of our salvation.

Devotion to Our Lady's Seven Sorrows has its roots deep in Sacred Scripture, Catholic tradition, and the revelations of Jesus and his Blessed Mother to St. Bridget of Sweden (1303-1373). The Blessed Mother not only suffered interiorly throughout her Son's life on earth, but after he ascended into heaven, as well. The devotion to her Seven Sorrows is directed toward seven poignant moments in the lives of Jesus and Mary. Here are some of those moments in poetry.

This traditional devotion comes to life for contemporary Christians who will find in Mary a compassionate companion in their own suffering and that of their loved ones. Amidst her glory as the Mother of Jesus, the life of Mary was one of both great sorrow and triumph. In The Seven Sorrows of Mary, Brother Joel Giallanza, C.S.C., offers a contemporary spirituality of this traditional devotion, highlighting seven moments of suffering in Mary's life, from Jesus' infancy to his death on Golgotha. Giallanza demonstrates how, through her strength in these moments, she is a model for us when our lives are consumed with grief. In this practical and devotional approach, he teaches how Our Lady of Sorrows is also a guide for us in our own struggles, however difficult, as we aim to be closer to her Son.

Completely occupied by the constant care necessary for her medically complex son, Theresa Kiser struggled to relate to the seemingly carefree Catholics around her. But when she stumbled upon the devotion to the Seven Sorrows of Mary, she was surprised - and deeply relieved - to discover that Our Lady walked this caregiving road before her. The Seven Sorrows devotion nourished her soul with comfort, companionship, and grace at a time when she needed it most. In Caring for a Loved One with Mary, you'll walk step-by-step through the Seven Sorrows of Mary, an ancient yet lesser-known Marian devotion. Theresa's story and the stories of other Catholic caregivers demonstrate that times of suffering and limitation do not indicate a departure from God's plan. Rather, they are how he brings us to his joy, as he did for Our Lady. Mary shows us when life doesn't go as planned that we are not alone. Moreover, our sorrows when caring for a loved one may be the very means by which we are to follow Christ, just as they were for our Blessed Mother. We know that Mary's sorrows were not final. For her, everything turned to joy. In God's timing and in God's way, our sorrows will, too.
