An informal symposium on rock mechanics was held at the 69th Annual Meeting of ASTM in Atlantic City, N. J., 26 June-1 July, 1966. This state-of-the-art report was presented then. This report is timely because of the rapidly growing expenditures of time and money being made to develop instruments and methods for determining rock stresses, the importance of which for large-scale mining and construction projects is fully recognized. Subcommittee 12 of Committee D-18 sponsored this informal symposium resulting in the establishment of guidelines for in situ stress measurements.
