Mary in the Wood; but William the Conqueror, when he built and endowed the Abbey, exempted that Parish from Episcopal jurisdiction, and made the Incumbent, afterwards called the Dean, receive institution and induction from the Abbot; by a composition between whom, and the Bishop of Chichester, the latter was to grant the Dean a licence to enter upon the cure of souls.
