DOWNLOAD EBOOKThis book is an introduction to Word Grammar, a theory of language structure founded and developed by Dick Hudson. In this theory, language is a cognitive network - a network of concepts, words and meanings containing all the elements of a linguistic analysis. The theory of language is therefore embedded in a theory of knowledge, in which there are no boundaries between one form of knowledge and any other. The most controversial idea in Word Grammar syntax is that phrase structure is redundant, because all its work can be done by means of dependencies between individual words. Word-word dependency is therefore a key concept in Word Grammar, and the syntax and semantics of a sentence is built upon this foundation. Contributors to this volume are primarily Word Grammar grammarians from across the world. All the chapters here manifest theoretical potentialities of Word Grammar, exploring how powerful Word Grammar is to offer analysis for linguistic phenomena in various languages. The chapters come from varying perspectives and include work on a number of languages, including English, German, Japanese, Swahili, Turkish and Ancient Greek. Phenomena studied include verbal inflection, case agreement, extraction, construction and code-mixing. This collection will be of interest to academics encountering Word Grammar for the first time, or for those who are already familiar with this theory and are interested in reading how it has evolved and what its future may hold.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKParts of Speech are a central aspect of linguistic theory and analysis. Though a long-established tradition in Western linguistics and philosophy has assumed the validity of Parts of Speech in the study of language, there are still many questions left unanswered. For example, should Parts of Speech be treated as descriptive tools or are they to be considered universal constructs? Is it possible to come up with cross-linguistically valid formal categories, or are categories of language structure ultimately language-specific? Should they be defined semantically, syntactically, or otherwise? Do non-Indo-European languages reveal novel aspects of categorical assignment? This volume attempts to answer these and other fundamental questions for linguistic theory and its methodology by offering a range of contributions that spans diverse theoretical persuasions and contributes to our understanding of Parts of Speech with analyses of new data sets. These articles were originally published in "Studies in Language" 32:3 (2008).

DOWNLOAD EBOOKThis Festschrift volume is published in honor of Juraj Hromkovič on the occasion of his 60th birthday. Juraj Hromkovič is a leading expert in the areas of automata and complexity theory, algorithms for hard problems, and computer science education. The contributions in this volume reflect the breadth and impact of his work. The volume contains 35 full papers related to Juraj Hromkovič’s research. They deal with various aspects of the complexity of finite automata, the information content of online problems, stability of approximation algorithms, reoptimization algorithms, computer science education, and many other topics within the fields of algorithmics and complexity theory. Moreover, the volume contains a prologue and an epilogue of laudatios from several collaborators, colleagues, and friends.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKAn engaging and fresh take on the rules and politics of English grammar, written in lively prose. It goes a step further than most books on grammar by providing an overview of the field, with a discussion of historical and current debates about grammar, and how we define, discuss, and approach it. Presents a novel, inquiry-based approach to understanding speakers' unconscious knowledge of English grammar Makes lucid connections, when relevant, with current linguistic theory Integrates language change and variation into the study of grammar Examines historical sources of socially evaluative perceptions of grammar, as 'good' or 'bad', and notions of language authority Provides syntactic explanations for many modern punctuation rules Explores some of the current controversies about grammar teaching in school and the role of Standard English in testing and assessment
