For the sketches the author is indebted to his wife, who accompanied him last January to Hillah and Babylon; some of them were done whenever leisure or less important occupations allowed her to indulge in a little recreation; they do not pretend to any artistic skill, though they are perfect as regards the accuracy of their delineation.
