DSpace is an open source software platform for creating and managing open access institutional repository for scholarly and/or published digital content. DSpace hosts and provides online access to variety of materials produced on a continuous basis as a part of teaching/learning and research. With the advent of the information and communication technologies, traditional library activities are undergoing transformation in a big way. Modern library’s collection includes a vast array of information resources, databases, electronic journals, e-books, digital images, institutional repositories etc. To manage a modern library, library professionals need to have awareness and knowledge on management of electronic resources, federated and discovered tools for single click search, literature techniques, application of RFID and other technologies, user needs and knowledge on soft skills etc. Keeping these perspectives and issues in mind the National Conference on Management of Modern Libraries (NACML) was organized by SEARCH- The health science library in association with the department of Library and Information Science, Manipal University, Manipal The main objective of the conference was to provide an opportunity to LIS professional to explore the ways and means to manage the modern libraries where electronic resources are playing an important role in meeting the information needs of the users and to explore, discuss and share ideas and knowledge related to innovative modern library management systems to meet the needs of the changing environment. In five technical sessions under five different categories titled Technologies for Management, Best Practice in Modern Libraries, digital libraries and Role of Library Professionals in Management of Modern Libraries held over the two days, total 51 papers were presented at the conference. Various challenges and issues related to management of modern libraries were discussed in the technical sessions and some of the authors shared the best practices of their libraries. The author highlighted the importance of digital libraries and stressed the needs of various skills to work in digital environment. The papers presented in the conference have been edited and brought out in the form of a conference proceedings.
Building Trustworthy Digital Repositories: Theory and Implementation combines information on both theory and practice related to creating trustworthy repositories for records into one up-to-date source. This book will bring all the credible theories into one place where they will be summarized, brought up to date, and footnoted. Moreover, the book will be international in its scope, and will discuss ideas coming from such important sources as Australia, Canada, and Western Europe. Until about five years ago, there were very few implementation projects in this area. This book brings together information on implementation projects that answer these questions: What is a trustworthy repository for digital records? Who is building these repositories, and what have been the results? How are institutions building or creating these repositories? How are institutions addressing the essential requirement related to the ingest or capture of records? How are institutions automatically and manually capturing essential metadata and audit trails? How are institutions implementing retention and disposal decisions within these systems? How are institutions implementing preservation strategies to ensure that digital objects are accessible over long periods of time? What is the current status of trustworthy repositories, and what will these systems look like in the future?

We are delighted to present the ECDL 2004 Conference proceedings from the 8th European Conference on Research and Advanced Technology for Digital - braries at the University of Bath, Bath, UK. This followed an impressive and geographicallydispersedseriesof locationsfor previousevents: Pisa(1997),H- aklion(1998),Paris(1999),Lisbon (2000),Darmstadt(2001),Rome (2002),and Trondheim (2003). The conference re?ected the rapidly evolving landscape of digital libraries, both in technology developments and in the focus of approaches to implem- tation. An emphasis on the requirements of the individual user and of diverse and distributed user communities was apparent. In addition, the conference p- gramme began to address, possibly for the ?rst time, the associated themes of e-research/e-scienceand e-learning and their relationship to digital libraries. We observed increasing commonality in both the distributed information archit- tures and the technical standards that underpin global infrastructure devel- ments. Digital libraries are integral to this information landscape and to the creation of increasingly powerful tools and applications for resource discovery and knowledge extraction. Digital libraries support and facilitate the data and information ?ows within the scholarly knowledge cycle and provide essential - abling functionality for both learnersand researchers. The varied and innovative research activities presented at ECDL 2004 demonstrate the exciting potential of this very fast-moving ?eld. The 148 papers, 43 posters, 5 panels, 14 tutorials and 4 workshops subm- ted this year were once again of the highest quality.
