This book contains selected articles from the Second International Conference on Geotechnical Engineering-Iraq (ICGE-Iraq) held in Akre/Duhok/Iraq from June 22 to 23, 2021, to discuss the challenges, opportunities, and problems of geotechnical engineering in projects. Also, the conference includes modern applications in structural engineering, materials of construction, construction management, planning and design of structures, and remote sensing and surveying engineering. The ICGE-Iraq organized by the Iraqi Scientific Society of Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineering (ISSSMFE) in cooperation with Akre Technical Institute / Duhok Polytechnic University, College of Engineering /University of Baghdad, and Civil Engineering Department/University of Technology. The book covers a wide spectrum of themes in civil engineering, including but not limited to sustainability and environmental-friendly applications. The contributing authors are academic and researchers in their respective fields from several countries. This book will provide a valuable resource for practicing engineers and researchers in the field of geotechnical engineering, structural engineering, and construction and management of projects.
The International Journal of Computational Methods and Experimental Measurements (CMEM) provides the scientific community with a forum to present the interaction between the complementary aspects of computational methods and experimental measurements, and to stress the importance of their harmonious development and integration. The steady progress in the efficiency of computers and software has resulted in the continuous development of computer simulation, which has influenced all scientific and engineering activities. As these simulations expand and improve, the need to validate them grows, and this can only be successfully achieved by performing dedicated experimental tests. Furthermore, because of their continual development, experimental techniques are becoming so complex and sophisticated that they need to be controlled by computers, with the data obtained processed by means of computational methods. The aim of the Journal is to review the latest work in computational methods and experimental measurements, with a view to achieving harmonious development and interaction between the two.
We are very pleased to introduce the proceedings of the International Conference on Latest Trends in Engineering and Technology [ICLTET 2023]. Papers were well presented in the conference in the fields of Artificial Intelligence, Machine learning, IOT, Communication Networks, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Nano Material Research, Business Management and many more to arouse a high level of interest. The presented papers maintained the high promise suggested by the written abstracts and the program was chaired in a professional and efficient way by the session chair who were selected for their expertise in the subject. The number of delegates was also highly gratifying, showing the high level of interest in the subject. This Proceeding provides the permanent record of what was presented. They indicate the state of development at the time of writing of all aspects of this important topic and will be invaluable to all academicians and researchers in the field for that reason. Finally, it is appropriate that we record our thanks to our fellow members of the Technical Organizing Committee for encouraging participation from those areas. We are also indebted to those who served as session chair and reviewers, without their support, the conference could not have been the success that it was. Structural Studies, Repairs and Maintenance of Heritage Architecture XVII The importance of retaining the built cultural heritage cannot be overstated. Rapid development and inappropriate conservation techniques are threatening many heritage unique sites in different parts of the world. Selected papers presented at the 17th International Conference on Studies, Repairs and Maintenance of Heritage Architecture are included in this volume. They address a series of topics related to the historical aspects and the reuse of heritage buildings, as well as technical issues on the structural integrity of different types of buildings, such as those constructed with materials as varied as iron and steel, concrete, masonry, wood or earth. Restoration processes require the appropriate characterisation of those materials, the modes of construction and the structural behaviour of the building. This knowledge can be gained through a series of material characterisation techniques, preferably via non-destructive tests. Modern computer simulation can provide accurate results demonstrating the stress state of the building and possible failure mechanisms affecting its stability. Of particular importance are studies related to their dynamic and earthquake behaviour aiming to provide an assessment of the seismic vulnerability of heritage buildings. Contributions originate from scientists, architects, engineers and restoration experts from all over the world and deal with different aspects of heritage buildings, including how to formulate regulatory policies, to ensure effective ways of preserving the architectural heritage. Earthquake Resistant Engineering Structures XIII Papers presented at the 13th International Conference on Earthquake Resistant Engineering Structures form this volume and cover basic and applied research in the various fields of earthquake engineering relevant to the design of structures. Major earthquakes and associated effects such as tsunamis continue to stress the need to carry out more research on those topics. The problems will intensify as population pressure results in buildings in regions of high seismic vulnerability. A better understanding of these phenomena is required to design earthquake resistant structures and to carry out risk assessments and vulnerability studies. The problem of protecting the built environment in earthquake-prone regions involves not only the optimal design and construction of new facilities but also the upgrading and rehabilitation of existing structures including heritage buildings. The type of highly specialized retrofitting employed to protect the built heritage is an important area of research. The included papers cover such topics as Seismic hazard and tsunamis; Building performance during earthquakes; Structural vulnerability; Seismic isolation and energy dissipation; Passive earthquake protection systems.
Computer Methods and Recent Advances in Geomechanics covers computer methods, material modeling and testing, applications to a wide range of geomechanical issues, and recent advances in various areas that may not necessarily involve computer methods, and will be of interest to researchers and engineers involved in geotechnical mechanics and geo-engineering.
