Existen diversos procesos de desalinización y se diferencian por el tipo de agua que se integra en el sistema, los impactos ambientales generados, los costos, su comportamiento con energías renovables, la calidad del producto, la energía consumida, el rango de capacidades a las que trabajan, la aplicabilidad en un contexto dado, su estabilidad y facilidad de uso. Mediante la comparación de procesos térmicos y de membranas, se encontraron las diferentes tecnologías utilizadas para el proceso de desalinización del agua de mar y agua salobre. El objetivo de este estudio consistió en comparar sistemas térmicos (Destilación en Múltiple Efecto (MED), Flashing en Múltiple Efecto (MSF) y Compresión de vapor (MVC)) y de membranas (Electrodiálisis (ED/EDR) y Osmosis Inversa (OI)) mediante el uso de criterios ambientales, económicos, técnicos y sociales. Estos se usaron para organizar una matriz y diversos escenarios que llevarán a determinar cuál de esos sistemas correspondería a una opción viable para un cierto contexto, enfocándose en el caso estudio de una comunidad indígena Wayuu en Siapana en La Guajira, Colombia. Por medio de una revisión bibliográfica sobre aspectos económicos, ambientales, técnicos y complementándolos mediante una visita a la comunidad (para tomar información social/cultural y de su posible relación con cada uno de estos sistemas) se llegó a conocer cuál/es sistemas serían óptimos por su eficiencia, dado un escenario. Para el caso del agua salobre se conoció que los sistemas que implementan Electrodiálisis únicamente (con y sin paneles solares), se acomodan de una mejor manera al contexto establecido. Para el contexto de agua salada, el sistema de Ósmosis Inversa se destacó por ser apto para una aplicación donde se haga uso de una fuente de agua con niveles de concentración de sal superiores.
