DOWNLOAD EBOOKFrom the back cover: Most Canadians have never heard of sogoshosha let alone know of their activities. An yet, it has been proposed that these Japanese general trading organizations may be developing into a prototype structure which will characterize much of international business in the future. In this study, Yoshi Tsurumi analyses the past and present development of these "large general trading firms" and their adaptation to dynamic changes in the business environment. The implications of Canada's increasing economic dependence on the United States and similarities between Canada and developing countries that have successfully created sogoshosha led the author to present a case for Canadian sogoshosha.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKThis book explores why Japan, despite being a world leader in many high technology industries such as automobiles and consumer electronics, is only a minor player in the global pharmaceutical industry. Japan provides a huge market for pharmaceuticals as the second largest consumer of prescription drugs after the United States, and is a massive importer of prescription drugs, relying on discoveries made elsewhere. This book charts the development of the industry, from the devastation resulting from the Second World War to its performance in the present day. Focusing in particular on antibiotics and anticancer drugs, the book analyses factors that have prevented Japan from leading the rapid advances in science and technology that have occurred globally over recent decades. Looking at the pharmaceutical industry, the book argues that the Japanese government’s research and development policies were not sufficiently incentivising. It also shows how the nature of capitalism in Japan - which featured close relations between government and industry as well as between and within firms - was appropriate for nurturing industrial development in the immediate post-war decades, but became much less effective in later years.

Sustainability – this word has found multiple dimensions in the recent past; encompassing environmental, social, and economical aspects. We are currently running on an ecological debt, which requires immediate and intense focus. Natural resources of our planet are getting depleted even more quickly than it can be regenerated by the earth. Until recently, businesses did not consider the way they did business. The results were seen in the planet’s eco systems, and climate. Companies are now; accountable to work with social responsibility; combining economic progress with social justice, and environmental concern. Hence social responsibility themes are given special focus to give consistency, and reality to socially conscious management. These themes have started to display efficacy in business.
