Electric power is a critical infrastructure that is vital to the U.S. economy and national security. Today, the nation's electric power infrastructure is threatened by malicious attacks, accidents, and failures, as well as disruptive natural events. As the electric grid evolves and becomes increasingly interdependent with other critical infrastructures, the nation is challenged to defend against these threats and to advance grid capabilities with reliable defenses. On November 1, 2019, the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine convened a workshop to gather diverse perspectives on current and future threats to the electric power system, activities that the subsector is pursuing to defend itself, and how this work may evolve over the coming decades. This publications summarizes the presentations and discussions from the workshop.

Violent Inheritance deepens the analysis of settler colonialism's endurance in the North American West and how infrastructures that ground sexual modernity are both reproduced and challenged by publics who have inherited them. E Cram redefines sexual modernity through extractivism, wherein sexuality functions to extract value from life including land, air, minerals, and bodies. Analyzing struggles over memory cultures through the region's land use controversies at the turn of and well into the twentieth century, Cram unpacks the consequences of western settlement and the energy regimes that fueled it. Transfusing queer eco-criticism with archival and ethnographic research, Cram reconstructs the linkages—"land lines"—between infrastructure, violence, sexuality, and energy and shows how racialized sexual knowledges cultivated settler colonial cultures of both innervation and enervation. From the residential school system to elite health seekers desiring the "electric" climates of the Rocky Mountains to the wartime incarceration of Japanese Americans, Cram demonstrates how the environment promised to some individuals access to vital energy and to others the exhaustion of populations through state violence and racial capitalism. Grappling with these land lines, Cram insists, helps interrogate regimes of value and build otherwise unrealized connections between queer studies and the environmental and energy humanities.

Power line-based communications networks: research, standards, applications, economics, and more. The state-of-the-art in power line communications: high-speed Internet access and beyond Maximizing data rates and minimizing electromagnetic compatibility problems Up-to-the-minute coverage of economic and regulatory issues For system evaluators, planners, designers, and technical implementers Power line communications (PLC) represents an exceptionally promising alternative for high-speed Internet access and data networking. Until now, however, little credible information has been available concerning R&D in the field. In Power Line Communications, leading researcher Klaus Dostert reviews significant technical progress toward high-speed information access over power lines at data rates of multiple Mbps. He explains how PLC can be integrated into existing telecommunications networks and reviews the economic and regulatory issues associated with deployment - including new opportunities in an era of utility deregulation. Coverage includes: PLC in context: historical roots, limitations, and potential Existing power networks and their characteristics PLC networking based on Europe's CENELEC EN 50065 standard Applications beyond Internet access: from home/building automation to digital audio and video from the wall-socket Technical options for maximizing data rates Solving electromagnetic compatibility problems Promising transmission and access methods The state-of-the-art in device and system development A realistic assessment of the future of power line communications An extensive bibliography, structured by issue Whatever your role in evaluating, designing, or implementing PLC networks, Power Line Communications offers the first single source for authoritative information on the state of the art.

Who is the human in media philosophy? Although media philosophers have argued since the twentieth century that media are fundamental to being human, this question has not been explicitly asked and answered in the field. Armond R. Towns demonstrates that humanity in media philosophy has implicitly referred to a social Darwinian understanding of the human as a Western, white, male, capitalist figure. Building on concepts from Black studies and cultural studies, Towns develops an insightful critique of this dominant conception of the human in media philosophy and introduces a foundation for Black media philosophy. Delving into the narratives of the Underground Railroad, the politics of the Black Panther Party, and the digitization of Michael Brown’s killing, On Black Media Philosophy deftly illustrates that media are not only important for Western Humanity but central to alternative Black epistemologies and other ways of being human.
