In the mid-1800s, Victoria grew from a fur-trading post into a provincial capital--the jewel in British Columbia's golden crown. Meanwhile, many of the early residents, happy to leave the Hudson's Bay Company behind, followed simple trails from the fort or discovered new routes of their own. In her first book, Danda Humphreys introduced readers to some of the people who forged those pioneer pathways. Now she takes us another step back in time to the roads and railways that connected the original city's core to today's suburbs. From Saanich to Sooke, street names tell stories of intrigue and adventure: Rowland Avenue, named for the farm labourer with a sinister sideline: hangman for the HBC. Joan Crescent, where coal baron Robert Dunsmuir's widow once resided in solitary splendour in a castle called Craigdarroch. Sidney Avenue, close to where the Brethour brothers donated land for the northern terminus of the "Cordwood Express," first train to link the city with the Saanich Peninsula and the islands in the Strait of Georgia. In this second book in her On the Street Where You Live trilogy, Danda once again combines her passion for the past with a penchant for lively prose to bring you stories about Victoria's pioneers. You know the streets; now meet the people--their lives, their loves and the legends they left behind.

This resource covers the life, times, and relationships of Queen Victoria, providing information about her children, her personal interests, the historic times in which she ruled, and the leaders she influenced. In this fascinating guide to every aspect of Queen Victoria's life, author Helen Rappaport analyzes the queen's personality, celebrates her achievements, and details the shortcomings of her empire, both in Britain, with its continuing divide between rich and poor, and overseas, where Britain's great empire was won by repression and exploitation. A–Z entries—including topics barely touched in standard biographies—cover things like the various assassination attempts on her life, her interest in dancing and Jack the Ripper's murders, and how her husband Prince Albert introduced the celebration of Christmas to England. Queen Victoria also describes individuals such as her companion Lady Jane Churchill, her physician Sir James Clark, and politicians such as William Gladstone and Benjamin Disraeli; events like the Irish potato famine; inventions like steam power; and issues such as missionary activity and prostitution. It also includes bibliographies both for each entry and overall, and a chronology.
Faced with the reality that she is dying with cancer, Victoria is confronted with the choice of telling her daughter and husband the deep, dark secret she has hidden in her heart for thirty years. While working in an abortion clinic, Victoria has an expectant mother come in off the street after the clinic was supposed to be closed for the night. She is near hysteria, exclaiming, "I want this thing out of me. I wish it would never be born. I wish it were dead. It ruined my life." It is apparent that the mother to be is living on the street and has no means to take care of herself, much less a newborn baby. In a split second, Victoria decides this young lady does not have to worry about caring for a child she obviously does not want in her life. Victoria gives the mother something to relax her, and a beautiful baby girl is born. When the mother comes to, Victoria explains to the mother that her baby has been stillborn and is no longer a problem to her. Relieved and overjoyed, the mother exclaims, "Bless you. Bless you. I've got my life back." As soon as she can leave the clinic, this would-be mother is out of the clinic and on with her life. Victoria claims the beautiful baby girl as her own. Little does Victoria know the events of the evening have been caught on tape. Claiming to be sick, Victoria never returns to the clinic and immediately moves to DC, where she has met and fallen in love with a prominent lawyer. They marry and raise Mary as their own. Later, Victoria is confronted by the birth mother, claiming Victoria stole her baby. Victoria continues to lie and insists that the woman's child died in childbirth and that, in fact, her child was a male. How will Victoria's life end? Will she take her lie to her grave, or will she explain to her daughter, husband, or her best friend what she did, she did out of love for her beautiful Mary? What will Victoria's choice be?
