Extending Horizons presents a wide-ranging collection of papers by leading practitioners in the field of analytic psychotherapy with children and young people, surveying recent developments in technique and theory; the application of the discipline to special areas of work; and its integration, in certain contexts, with other systems such as family and group psychotherapy. From its origins in the traditional 'one-to-one relationship' between therapist and patient, as exemplified in the pioneering work of Anna Freud, Melanie Klein and Margaret Lowenfeld, the contributors to this present volume demonstrate how child and adolescent psychotherapy has advanced its frontiers in recent years to deal with specific areas of concern, such as child sexual abuse and mental or physical disability, and adapted itself - sometimes, initially, as a result of pressures imposed by the lack of adequate resources - to applications in wider settings where multi-disciplinary factors are engaged and the 'one-to-one relationship' is waived in preference to parent/child, family or group modes of treatment.

This harrowing tale of supernatural suspense kicks off a new series from the visionary mind of #1 New York Times bestselling author Scott Westerfeld. When a plane crash-lands in the arctic, eight young survivors step from the wreckage expecting to see nothing but ice and snow. Instead they find themselves lost in a strange jungle with no way to get home and little hope of rescue. Food is running out. Water is scarce. And the jungle is full of threats unlike anything the survivors have ever seen before--from razor-beaked shredder birds to carnivorous vines and much, much worse. With danger at every turn, these eight kids must learn to work together to survive. But cliques and rivalries threaten to tear them apart. And not everyone will make it out of the jungle alive.

Boundless Horizons tells the extraordinary story of Marie Clay's lifelong search for new possibilities in teaching young children to read and write. She pursued a tantalising quest: "What is possible for children with reading problems? What would have to change?' Observing young readers in ordinary classrooms she uncovered explanations of how children take on literacy learning and how that learning changes over time. From those discoveries arose the internationally successful literacy intervention for children having temporary difficulty-Reading Recovery.

The first Canadian Conference on Children, held in the province of Quebec in October, 1960, was the culmination of several years of planning and of three years' specific study of projects which dealt with existing programmes for children in Canada. Delegates came from provincial and national organizations and the Conference was supported by a large number of organizations connected with child health, welfare, and education. The programme of the Conference was divided into three sections: plenary sessions, group discussions of the projects, and group discussion of children under three headings: "the early years," "the middle years," and "the transition years." The whole programme covered children from birth to about the age of seventeen. The Proceedings includes the speeches presented at the plenary sessions (by Sir Geoffrey Vickers, Chairman of the Research Committee of the British Mental Health Research Fund; Dr. K.D. Naegele of the University of British Columbia; and Dr. Otto Klineberg of Columbia University); and valuable summaries of discussions by Dr. Murray Ross (York University), Mgr. Irénée Lussier (Université de Montréal), and Dr. N.A.M. MacKenzie (University of British Columbia).
