I was invited to join the Organizing Committee of the First International Conference on Complex Sciences: Theory and Applications (Complex 2009) as its ninth member. At that moment, eight distinguished colleagues, General Co-chairs Eugene Stanley and Gaoxi Xiao, Technical Co-chairs J·nos Kertész and Bing-Hong Wang, Local Co-chairs Hengshan Wang and Hong-An Che, Publicity Team Shi Xiao and Yubo Wang, had spent hundreds of hours pushing the conference half way to its birth. Ever since then, I have been amazed to see hundreds of papers flooding in, reviewed and commented on by the TPC members. Finally, more than 200 contributions were - lected for the proceedings currently in your hands. They include about 200 papers from the main conference (selected from more than 320 submissions) and about 33 papers from the five collated workshops: Complexity Theory of Art and Music (COART) Causality in Complex Systems (ComplexCCS) Complex Engineering Networks (ComplexEN) Modeling and Analysis of Human Dynamics (MANDYN) Social Physics and its Applications (SPA) Complex sciences are expanding their colonies at such a dazzling speed that it - comes literally impossible for any conference to cover all the frontiers.

The scarcity of the radio spectrum and the increasing demand on bandwidth makes it vital to optimize the spectrum use. While a maximum efficiency should be attained, a minimal interference level should be maintained. OFDM has been selected as the modulation scheme in several wireless standards. Channel estimation is a fundamental task in OFDM and it becomes even more challenging in the presence of interference. In this thesis, our aim is to propose channel estimation algorithms for OFDM systems in the presence of interference, where conventional channel estimators designed for OFDM fail. First, we consider the cognitive radio environment and propose a novel channel estimation framework for fast time-varying channels in OFDM with NBI. This is accomplished through an expectation maximization (EM) based algorithm. This formulation allows us to obtain a closed-form expression for the estimation of the noise power. In this thesis, we are particularly interested in a very recent scheme of superimposed pilots for OFDM (DNSP). DNSP assures interference-free pilots at the expense of data interference. Seen the modernity of DNSP, a suitable receiver has to be designed to cope with its design. We first propose a low-complexity interference canceler (IC) for slow time-varying channels with DNSP. The performance of the proposed IC is guaranteed when the channel estimation error is small. As another contribution, we extend the design of the approximated IC for DNSP so as to take the channel estimation errors into account. Finally, we consider robust channel estimation which can be viewed as one of the perspectives of this thesis.

The benefits and success of multi-carrier (MC) modulation on one side and the flexibility offered by the spread spectrum (SS) technique on the other side have motivated many researchers to investigate the combination of both techniques since 1993. This combination known as multi-carrier spread spectrum (MC-SS) benefits from the advantages of both systems and offers high flexibility, high spectral efficiency, simple detection strategies, narrow-band interference rejection capability, etc. The basic principle of this combination is straightforward: The spreading is performed as direct sequence spread spectrum (DS-SS) but instead of transmitting the chips over a single carrier, several sub-carriers are employed. The MC modulation and demodulation can easily be realized in the digital domain by performing IFFT and FFT operations. The separation of the users' signals can be performed in the code domain. MC-SS systems can perform the spreading in frequency direction, which allows for simple signal detection strategies. Since 1993, MC-SS has been deeply studied and new alternative solutions have been proposed. Meanwhile, deep system analysis and comparison with DS-CDMA have been performed that show the superiority of MC-CDMA.
