Excerpt from Changes in the Cost of Living: July, 1914 July, 1921 This is the tenth report in the series of studies of changes in the cost of living among wage-earners in the United States which have been issued by the National Industrial Conference Board.1 In the present report are described in detail such changes in the cost of living as occurred between July, 1914, and July, 1921; between July, 1920, when the peak of high prices was reached, and July, 1921; and also between March, 1921, and July, 1921. These changes are shown graphically in the chart on the opposite page. From this chart it is seen that between July, 1914, and July, 1921, the cost of living among wage - earners in the United States rose Between July, 1920, and July, 1921, there was a decrease of This includes a decrease of between March, 1921, and July, 1921. The cost of food began to fall after July, 1920, and declined steadily throughout the year until July, 1921, when a slight increase over June, 1921, was reported. The average cost of fuel and light combined began to drop in March, 1921. In the period between March, 1921, and July, 1921, decreases in rents, of sufficient importance to affect the general average, occurred for the first time. The cost of clothing, which had started to decline prior to July, 1920, con tinned to decrease until the summer of 1921. The average cost of all sundries combined remained in July, 1921, at the same point where it was in July, 1920, and March, 1921.
