That exhibition made a very favorable impression on amateurs and connoisseurs, and was to many something like a revelation. A few of the leading painters of Holland were known here previous to that time, but it was not generally known that the serious feeling which characterizes the work of Mauve, Israels, and Maris runs generally through the school, and is to be found in a number of painters who until recently were little known in this country.
