He was graduated at the Yale Law School in 1855 and began practice in Schenectady, N. Y. He was elected District Attorney in 1856, retaining the Office till 1863, and held the position of County Judge from 1865 to 1870. He was a member of the Constitutional Convention of 1867 and in 1873 was elected Justice of the Supreme Court of the State of New York. He became President ad interim of Union College in 1884.
