On February 4, 1861, the Confederate States of America was formed, and almost immediately the first Confederate notes were printed – the famous “Montgomery” notes. These would be followed by many designs over the next four years. The seventy different designs or “type” notes are eagerly sought today by collectors, historians and family historians, and a collection of Confederate currency offers fascinating insights into the tumultuous Civil-War period. Pierre Fricke examines these series of Confederate notes, highlighting the history and circumstances in which they were created. This easy-to-read, fun and educational book offers an introduction to the often beautiful notes that financed the Confederacy.

Excerpt from The Currency of the Confederate States of America: A Description of the Various Notes, Their Dates of Issue, Varieties, Series, Sub-Series, Letters, Numbers, Etc.; Accompanied With Photographs of the Distinct Varieties of Each Issue Colonial and Continental currency of old, may still not inaptly be com pared with them in contrast to our own Greenbacks; so far, indeed, that fac-similes (as will be shown in the course of this paper) were spread broadcast throughout the South among the negroes and others, in many instances with more facility than the genuine notes themselves. Many a possessor of bundles of this paper still clings to them tenaciously, in the fond but delusive hopes of a final redemption, if not at their face value, still at a discount. Let but a collector appear among such with the desire to complete a series, suspicions are aroused, and this worth less stuff is carefully packed away as if it had a market value. The following lines, which have already appeared in newspaper columns and the American Journal of Numismatics, are deserving of a wider circulation. They were written by Major J of the Texas Brigade, after the surrender at Appomattox: IN memoriam Respectfully dedicated to the Holders of Confederate Treasury Notes. Representing nothing on God's earth now, And naught in the waters below it, As a pledge of the nation that's dead and gone, Keep it, dear friends, and show it. Show it to those who will lend an ear To the tale that this paper can tell, Of liberty born of the patriot's dream Of the storm-cradled nation that fell. Too poor to possess the precious ores, And too much of a stranger to borrow, We issued today our promise to pay, And hoped to redeem on the morrow. The days rolled on, and weeks became years, But our coffers were empty still; Coin was so rare that the Treasury quaked If a dollar Should drop in the till. C This collection, the property of a private gentleman, embraces many rare and choice Specimens of Colonial and Continental Paper Money, one of the most interest? Ing of'which is the Vermont note (lot 40 of the cata logue), issued Feb, 1781; the motto, Vermont calls for Justice, and the chain, containing thirteen connected links and an additional one, lonely in its separation, is very suggestive, while the rarity of the note makes it a desirable acquisition to the collector.
