Thinking on development informs and inspires the actions of people, organizations, and states in their continuous effort to invent a better world. This volume examines the ideas behind development: their origins, how they have changed and spread over time, and how they may evolve over the coming decades. It also examines how the real-life experiences of different countries and organizations have been inspired by, and contributed to, thinking on development. The extent to which development 'works' depends in part on particular local, historical, or institutional contexts. General policy prescriptions fail when the necessary conditions that make them work are either absent, ignored, or poorly understood. There is a need to grasp how people understand their own development experience. If the countries of the world are varied in every way, from their initial conditions to the degree of their openness to outside money and influence, and success is not centred in any one group, it stands to reason that there cannot be a single recipe for development. Each chapter provides an analytical survey of thinking about development that highlights debates and takes into account critical perspectives. It includes contributions from scholars and practitioners from the global North and the global South, spanning at least two generations and multiple disciplines. It will be a key reference on the concepts and theories of development - their origins, evolution, and trajectories - and act as a resource for scholars, graduate students, and practitioners.

This book centers around an intense debate among donors, policymakers, development practitioners, and academics on the efficacy of aid in eradicating poverty while promoting human development. It seeks to fill the gap in present literature by presenting stories of better spending through implementing Sustainable Development Goals and addressing Agenda 2030 via indigenization of global development goals with initiatives at local and national levels. The book adopts an innovative approach to dealing with aid effectiveness by highlighting the relevance of better spending, rather than excessive spending. It does so with real-life examples of interventions made in the Global South to realize the vision of "thinking globally and acting locally". Science and Technology for Development: The Role of U.S. Universities examines the role of U.S. universities in helping to build an indigenous science and technology (S&T) base in developing countries. U.S. university involvement in engineering, agriculture, and science is analyzed, along with conditions for success or failure and limitations to involvement. Successful experiences in developing countries are highlighted. This book is comprised of seven chapters and begins with an overview of the past legislative mandate for U.S. university involvement in S&T for development. The reader is then introduced to U.S. university activity in three fields: engineering, agriculture, and science. Within the analysis of each field, specific past involvements, current thinking, and field-specific issues are explored. The subsequent chapters discuss future roles for U.S. universities, including types of involvement, mechanisms for involvement, and forms of cooperation among U. S. institutions. Eight legislative changes are outlined for expanding U.S. university involvement in international S&T cooperation. This monograph will be of interest to S&T policymakers and university officials.
Canada was one of the first Western countries to sign an agreement to provide development aid to China in 1983, and the Canadian International Development Agency invited universities to cooperate in ways that would facilitate "the multiplication of contacts at the thinking level." In Canadian Universities in China’s Transformation, leading scholars from Canadian and Chinese universities elaborate on the historical experience of collaboration in areas as different as environmental science, marine science, engineering, management, law, agriculture, medicine, education, minority cultures, and women’s studies.
