Excerpt from The American Medical Journal, 1875, Vol. 3 The tincture is not uniform, varying in strength and appearance. Whilst one sample would be colorless, another would deposit a brownish sediment. Again, the taste cannot be disguised, and gives the physician much trouble to overcome the prejudices or fears of his patients. As an illustration, I will state: I gave a very intelligent gentleman a preparation containing the tincture of phosphorus. In a few hours he returned. There being other persons in the office, he asked for a private interview. This being granted, he stated, that being a good friend to me, he desired to be careful that he should say nothing before others that might tend to destroy their confidence in my skill, etc. Whilst admitting the fact that all persons are liable to make mistakes, he hinted at the fact that some mistakes were followed by serious results. Excerpt from The North American Medical and Surgical Journal, 1827, Vol. 3 Tun Editors of this Journal feel themselves called upon to express their gratitude, for the very liberal and favourable feeling which has been expressed towards them, by several contemporaneous periodicals. Their thanks are particularly due, in this country, to the Philadelphia Journal of the Me dical and Physical Sciences; in Canada, to the Quebec Me dical Journal; and in France, to the Revue Encyclopedique. The liberality' of the conductors of these works has led them to expressions of commendation, which, while we feel them to be far beyond our desserts, are warmly treasured by us, as incitements to future exertion. Others have paid us the higher compliment of copying a more or less considerable por tion of our reviews or of the Quarterly Summary especially when the articles extracted contained American information. We are highly gratified to find the Journal thus serving to diffuse a knowledge of the useful contributions made to its pages, through a wider sphere than its original circulation. Mason in his expedition against the Pequoit Indians in 1637 but whether he belonged to the colony, or the ship merely, is not known. In 1649 we find a law passed by the Massachusetts Colony, forbiding Chirurgeons, Midwives, Physicians, or others, to exercise, or put forth any act con trary to the known rules ofart, in each mystery and occupation, to exercise any force or violence or cruelty, upon or toward the body of any, whether young or old (pot even in the most desperate cases) without the advice and consent ofsuch as are skillful in the same art, (if any such may be had, ) or at least, of the wisest and gravest there present, and consent of the patient or patients. If they be mentis compares, much less contrary to such advice and consent, &c. This provision is sufficiently indicative of the condition of the profession, at this early period, in the new-england States.
