That the ship was so excellent a sailer that it would serve as a model for the Hollanders that it would betray other ships, by its English build, and by putting on English colours; and moreover, as a climax of exasperation, that young Tromp, having taken by treachery an English ship, the Samuel, had brought her into Leghorn, with the English colours trailing under her poop. Excerpt from Calendar of State Papers, Colonial Series America and West Indies: Preserved in the Public Record Office The papers Of 1732 are considerably less in number than those for either 1730 or 1731. Whereas they numbered respectively 652 and 595, without counting enclosures, there are only 518 abstracts for 1732 and this volume is therefore smaller than those of the two previous years. There seems to be no special reason for the diminution, though some part Of it may possibly be attributed to a decline in the number Of David Dunbar's prolix letters. Excerpt from Calendar of State Papers, Colonial Series, America and West Indies, 1724-1725: Preserved in the Public Record Office The provenance Of the papers here dealt with has been mentioned in the Prefaces to early volumes Of the Calendars of State Papers, '1' but it is convenient here to recapitulate some of that scattered information in order to recall certain points in regard to the sources of the materials included. After the appointment of Sir Thomas Wilson as Keeper of the State Papers in 1612, it was ordered that the papers Of the Secretaries of State should be deposited, when they ceased to be immediately needed, in his custody in the State Paper Office. In fact, however, this regulation was very imperfectly obeyed, and many Secretaries of State carried away their papers when they left Office. The collection Of papers now preserved under the custody Of the Master Of the Rolls is therefore imperfect, and there are many gaps. Excerpt from Calendar of State Papers, Vol. 43: Colonial Series America and West Indies Preserved in the Public Record Office On the other hand, the historical relationship of Georgia to other colonies and to the wider themes of colonial history argues cogently for the inclusion of these records. This is especially so in the years before the outbreak of war in 1739. Apart from Gibraltar, Georgia was the only land-frontier between British and Spanish possessions; Spain did not recognize the existence of the new colony on land over which she claimed sovereignty. As early as 1737 there were widespread apprehensions of an attack upon Georgia from Florida. (see, for example, index to the present volume under Georgia, Foreign Rela tions; South Carolina; Spain and the Spaniards) It is an obvious convenience to the historian that these expressions of anxiety in and about Georgia should be calendared and indexed in a volume which also contains material illustrating the fear of Spanish aggressions in Jamaica, the Bahamas and the British West Indian colonies generally. The decision to include the Georgia records adds greatly to the number of papers in this volume. Of the 662 principal abstracts, 277 derive from the correspondence, minutes and memorials of the Georgia Society. Inevitably some of these papers have a less general historical significance than those of long-established crown colonies. But the domestic minutiae of Georgia may be expected to diminish in later volumes. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
