The Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) presents the twelfth issue of the Bulletin on Population and Vital Statistics in the ESCWA Region. The Bulletin provides detailed information on the population of the ESCWA region and its vital events: births, deaths, marriages and divorces. It presents this information in three parts: population; fertility and mortality; and marriage and divorce. In this issue, the Bulletin presents the main indicators for each vital event. These indicators have been computed using national data, weighted by population estimates from the 2008 Revision of the World Population Prospects, prepared by the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs. Major changes have been introduced to produce a completely revised Bulletin, in which both quality and relevance of disseminated data are enhanced. The objective of these changes is to provide a more effective tool for monitoring comparable data and indicators. This bilingual publication is in English and Arabic.

In recent years there has been a shift away from thinking of U.S. energy problems as long-term technology and resource issues and toward a greater focus on shorter term problems of the insecurity of oil imports. In February 1980, with the impacts of the 1979 Iranian revolution fresh in everyone's mind, we formed a study group with the objective to use quantitative analytical techniques to study the impacts of oil supply disruptions and the kinds of national policies that could help reduce those impacts.
