Socialism in late Victorian and Edwardian Britain was a highly literate movement. Every socialist group produced some form of written text through which their particular brand of politics could be promoted. This edition collects serialized fiction and short stories that have not been published since their original appearance.

Socialism in late Victorian and Edwardian Britain was a highly literate movement. Every socialist group produced some form of written text - a periodical, pamphlets or books – through which their particular brand of politics was promoted. Periodicals, from the Social Democratic Federation’s Justice onward, included serials and short fiction written by, and for, socialists. Unlike the literature of the earlier Chartist movement or the political history of socialism, the literature of the British Socialist movement has been neglected. This fiction often carries a clear political message which helps to illustrate both the concerns of the movement and those of the individual authors. Many of the authors included in this collection were key figures within Socialism and these texts will shed fresh light on their views and attitudes. This edition includes both serialized fiction and short stories that have not been published since their original appearances. Texts are presented chronologically to follow the development of ideas and to allow comparison with other literature of the period. The collection will be of interest to scholars of labour history, British political history, print culture and late Victorian and Edwardian society.
