Having helped Cleo – the daughter of business tycoon Alexander Selwyn – and her surrogate Replicant mother, Isobel, escape Off-world, Blade Runner Aahna ‘Ash’ Ashina has returned to Los Angeles to hunt Selwyn down. Following a lead, Ash visited the ruins of the Tyrell Corporation. With the help of a deranged scientist called Fost, whom she found living there, she accessed the Tyrell mainframe and uncovered a list of people connected to a secret project called Isobel. Believing the list would lead her to Selwyn, Ash set off in her borrowed Spinner to follow the trail. However, following a tip-off from Selwyn, a squadron of LAPD Spinners were lying in wait for Ash, and she was arrested. Whilst transporting her to prison, the police were ambushed, and Ash was freed and taken to a deserted farmhouse by members of the Replicant Resistance.

Early in the 21 Century, the Tyrell Corporation advanced Robot evolution into the Nexus phase – a being virtually identical to a human – known as a Replicant. Replicants were used Off-world as slave labor. Those who escaped to Earth were hunted by Blade Runner units, ordered to kill any trespassing Replicant upon detection. In 2022, a Replicant attack on the Tyrell Corporation forced the company into bankruptcy and erased all records or existing Replicants. The surviving Nexus 8 models disappeared with the help of the Replicant Underground. Many Replicants remained in servitude. In 2027, Aahna “Ash”Ashina, rejoined the Blade Runner department, although her superiors are unaware that her lover Freysa, is a leader in the Replicant Underground. While investigating a report of a rogue Replicant, Ash discovered that a Nexus 6 Replicant, Yotun, whom she had failed to retire 12 years previously, had somehow become the leader of a Replicant guerrilla army. Yotun ordered his army to launch an all-out terrorist attack upon Los Angeles and compelled all Replicants in the city to revolt against their masters. Freysa seemingly joined Yotun’s crusade in an effort to stop him, however, he blinded her in one eye when he discovered her subterfuge. Ash rescued her lover and set out to bring Yotun down, once and for all. However her superiors have become suspicious of Ash’s motives. Meanwhile, Yotun has started to succumb to the ravages of time, and even the regular blood transfusions from his loyal supporters that he was using to rejuvenate himself have started to fail. Convinced that an old diary of Eldon Tyrell holds the key to his survival, Yotun sent Pekka and another Replicant off to retrieve the journal from a maximum security vault. There Pekka was killed by Blade Runner Marlowe

Replicants are bioengineered humans, once designed by the Tyrell Corporation for use Off-world. After a series of violent rebellions, their manufacture was prohibited, and Tyrell Corp went bankrupt. Niander Wallace acquired the remains of Tyrell Corp and created a new line of Replicants who obey. A Replicant underground survives, led by the former combat model Freysa and her human partner Aahna Ashina, known as Ash, formerly a Blade Runner. Twenty years ago, in 2019, Ash spared the Replicant Isobel Selwyn, a replica of industrialist Alexander Selwyn’s wife. Together with Alexander’s human daughter Cleo, Isobel escaped to the Off-world colonies. Searching for the late Alexander Selwyn’s research into Replicant physiology, Niander Wallace sent LUV and an Ash clone, to hunt down both Cleo and Isobel, believing that Isobel held the secret to Replicant fertility. Deciding to take the fight to Wallace himself, Ash visited ex-Blade Runner Cal Moreau hoping to find a way to infiltrate Wallace’s heavily guarded penthouse complex. However, after the meeting Ash was confronted by her Replicant double. Knowing that she had been tailed, Ash had arranged for Morton to shadow her and together, the clone was captured. Taking her back to Freysa and the others for interrogation, the cloned Replicant revealed that she too wanted to stop Wallace and asked to join Ash and the others in their struggle…

Early in the 21st Century, the Tyrell Corporation advanced robot evolution into the Nexus phase – a being virtually identical to a human – known as a replicant. After a bloody mutiny by a Nexus 6 combat team in an Off-World colony, Replicants were declared illegal on Earth – under penalty of death. Special police squads – Blade Runner Units – had orders to shoot to kill, upon detection, any trespassing replicant. In 2019, the Blade Runner Aahna “Ash” Ashina rescued Cleo Selwyn, daughter of agribusiness tycoon Alexander Selwyn, from a plot to give the girl to the Tyrell Corporation for genetic experimentation. Ash and Cleo left Los Angeles and disappeared. In 2022, Replicant production was banned altogether. Remaining Nexus 8 units were permitted to live out their lifespans in service to their owners in the colonies. Off World, 2026.

Early in the 21 Century, the Tyrell Corporation advanced Robot evolution to the Nexus phase – a being virtually identical to a human – known as a Replicant. Replicants were used Off-world as slave labor, in the hazardous exploration and colonization of other planets. On Earth, Tyrell continued to experiment with further enhancements – because progress stops for no man. LAPD Detective Cal Moreaux has discovered that the suicide of Dr. Lyida Kine was actually an elaborate ruse constructed by the Tyrell Corp engineer so she could live freely as a Replicant named Asa. Dr. Kine’s latest experiment – the escaped Nexus 5 prototype – initially received the blame for her death, however, Cal has discovered the truth – the identity of the Nexus 5’s host consciousness: his sister, Nia Moreaux. More existentially advanced than the others, Nia has been “awakening” some Replicants in the slums of Los Angeles, causing them to leave their positions of servitude in pursuit of autonomy. Tyrell Corp executive, Ilora Stahl has been charged with the Nexus 5’s capture, and she will stop at nothing to protect her job and the company’s brand in spite of growing chaos. In desperation, Ilora launched an all-out attack against the Sector-6B slums. Cal, Asa, and Nia raced to save the residents and together with Desiree, Marcus, and the survivors of Nia’s “awakened” Replicant followers, sought refuge with Divina in the safe haven of La Plume Sauvage, only to find it too had been destroyed by Ilora’s henchmen. Nia realized what she had to do to put a stop to all of this…

American culture is changing, a sentiment echoed in phrases such as “the new normal,” and “in these uncertain times,” that regularly introduce all forms of public discourse now, signally a national sense of vulnerability and transformation. Cultural shifts generally involve multiple catalysts, but in this collection the contributors focus on the role changing discourse norms play in cancel culture, corporatism, the counter-sexual revolution, racialism, and a radically divided political climate. Three central themes arise in the arguments. First, that contemporary discourse norms emphasize outcomes rather than shared understanding, which support institutional and political goals but contribute to the contemporary political divide, and the notion that we are engaged in a zero-sum game. These discourse norms give rise to a form of Adorno’s administered world, such that we order society according to dominant opinions, which generally means those well acclimated to institutional and corporate culture. Finally, as Arendt feared, the personal has become political, meaning that the toxic public discourse invades private discourse, reducing personal autonomy and leaving us perpetually under the scrutiny of institutional authority.
