Excerpt from Biographical Encyclopedia of Connecticut and Rhode Island of the Nineteenth Century This work, then, lays no claim to historic merit, except the history of Individuals. The annals of the Commonwealths of Connecticut and Rhode Island have been often and well written, and little or nothing remains to be added thereto. But the Biography of their noble and worthy sons is all unwritten, except in rare instances. No States in the Union have been more fertile in deserving men than these two. To bring the main facts in the lives of some of these into public View is the real object of this volume. We say saim, for we do not propose to assert that all the deserving merit of two States is concentrated in this book. Many of the persons here mentioned have lived in public stations but others have lived away from the public eye, in private worth alone. The actions, the lives of both classes are fruitful subjects of study, as a sort of preparation for the larger subject of the general history of their States. But we enter into no vexed questions of political or relig ious influences, leaving the facts simply to speak for themselves. These facts have been gathered from the most reliable sources, and it is confidently asserted that the record here presented is in every sense trustworthy. It is believed that such a record will be of incalculable benefit, not only to the living, but to yet others who are to come after, and a part of whose culture will be the study of the history of these very times in which these men, of whom we have written the Biographies, play no mean part. Will it be indulging 'a hope utterly vain, if we venture to foresee that these Biographies may form one of the most acceptable sources from which the future historian of Connecticut and Rhode Island may draw his material, when these, our times, shall have passed into the domain of history? To so hope is only to' anticipate what the past has already demonstrated to be the almost uniform rule. In that justified confidence, then, of present and prospective value, we commit to its fate this volume, freighted, as it is, with the o'utline_of so many valuable and commendable lives. We trust in the verdict the two Commonwealths will pronounce on their beloved sons. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Encyclopedia of Connecticut Biography, Genealogical-Memorial: Representative Citizens It was not so much from the point of view of the formal observation of his' duties and obligations, however, that honor is due Mr. Loomis, as because of the' courageous attitude he assumed in the face of the appalling responsibilities of those ominous days. The close of Bu chanan's administration and the opening of Lincoln's witnessed the rapid develop ment of that controversy which came to a head with the outbreak of the terrible war which was to last so long and drain the nation of so much wealth and so many valuable lives, and for those in whose hands lay the shaping of events the bur den was indeed a heavy one. And a historical and topographical view (if the towns of Haddam and east-haddam, by the Rev. David D. An, published in 1814; the work has been wholly compiled from original materials. The facts have been collected either directly by ourselves, or through'the aid of correspond ents. Every county, and almost every impbrtaut town in each State, has been visited; and a circular letter, specifying the several subjects upon which information was requested, has been addressed to one or more of the most intelligent inhabitants in every other town. The great number of gentlemen who, in this way, have furnished information for the work, are entitled to our' warmest acknowledgments We are sensible, that information obtained in this mode may, in some instances, have been erroneous; but considering the respectable sources from whence it has been derived, we have no doubt, but that in general it will be found correct. Excerpt from Encyclopedia of Connecticut Biography, Genealogical-Memorial: Representative Citizens; Compiled With the Assistance of a Capable Corps of Advisers and Contributors There are men upon whom the world looks as individuals. There are men whose breadth of character reaches out only to the little circle about them. Then there are men to whom all the world is brother, who in heart and deed, as well as in the spoken word, extend the hand of fellowship to every man be be king or laborer. This was the man which those who knew him best saw in George Ed ward Lounsbury, fortieth Governor of the State of Connecticut. This was not an attitude with him. It was the sincere ex pression of a great soul, attuned to catch the harmony of life through whatever turmoil might arise. He saw good in everything, read faith and high aspira tion in every human character. De scended from a long line of ancestors. Who had held positions of honor in public life, and who had been successful in a material way, he was still a man of simple, whole some tastes, while at the same time he filled with dignity and grace every pub lic duty which devolved upon him.
