Excerpt from The Place-Names of Berkshire In 1901 my essay on 'The Place-names of Cambridgeshire' was published for the Cambridge Antiquarian Society, and a little later the same Society published my similar essay on 'The Place-names of Huntingdonshire'. In 1906 they published my 'Place-names of Bedfordshire'. In 1904 the East Herts. Archaeological Society published for me a somewhat larger pamphlet on 'The Place-names of Hertfordshire'. After thus completing some account of the place-names of these four counties, it occurred to me to investigate those of Berkshire. I was inclined to this by two considerations. The first, that it is not a very large county in itself; and secondly, that Birch's edition of Anglo-Saxon Charters contains a considerable number that refer to this county, so that the Anglo-Saxon spellings of a rather large proportion of the names arc readily accessible. It is necessary to repeat here some of the considerations which it is desirable for the student to know. 1. The place-names of Berkshire are nearly all of native English origin; and are formed in strict accordance with the rules of Anglo-Saxon grammar. 2. They are nearly all of one of two types. Either they are significant of possession, like SparshoAbout the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Boy Scouts of Berkshire The story, you will find if you read it, leaves the Chipmunks at a point where they are strong, pre pared, and Old enough to tackle bigger things. The smiling Peanut, always cheerful, always ready for fun or for trouble, can hardly be expected to stay cooped up in the village of Southmead all his life! We have no idea where he'll go, but it is certain that he, and some of his fellow scouts, will go somewhere pretty soon, to see strange countries and tackle new adventures. And it is equally certain that Peanut will expect us to write a book about it. The last time we saw him, he had almost decided to save up his earnings and go with Mr. Rogers to the great Dismal Swamp Of Virginia, and was urging the Wildcat and others to go along, too. Anyhow. Excerpt from Pittsfield: The Gem City of Berkshire The object of this booklet is to assist the visitor - the stranger - to a ready familiarity with Pittsfield, its environments, its points of interest and some of the interesting facts of its history. Pittsfield's fame is widespread and the term "Gem City" by which it is known, is most fittingly applied. Few cities are more beautifully located, few can boast of such charming surroundings, few are more delightful in all ways. The city's first claim to distinction arises from its natural beauty, a beauty which has been vastly enhanced by its inhabitants. But it has a sure claim to prominence by reason of its thrift and industry, and, as a manufacturing center, it is progressing steadily and surely. One very notable thing about Pittsfield is the fact that while it is a manufacturing town in the real sense, yet its industries are entirely unobtrusive, being located on the outskirts of the city where they detract nothing from the charm of the place. The city possesses many advantages as a place of manufacture, and its railroad facilities are of the best. As a place of residence it is unsurpassed, possessing as it does the advantages of the modern municipality coupled with all the delights of the country.
